We are trying to do an estimate on a project.  The client has only been able to supply locked PDF files for which he does not know the password.  The files are fairly lengthy.

After trying a number of solutions mentioned at various locations on the internet I came across this site:
http://www.ensode.net/pdf-crack.jsf

I uploaded my pdf and voila!  The PDF was unlocked and I could copy the text from the converted PDF to Word and Count characters.   You upload your file and get back a file with the suffix .jsf that I was able to open with my copy of Acrobat 8.1 professional

If this has been mentioned here before I apologize for going over already-covered ground.

I thought this might be of use to other character-counters out there.

That sounds useful, but I wonder how the typical client would feel about having their confidential information uploaded to an unknown group of hackers.

(Of course, this is mostly a theoretical question, since ordinarily a client would not provide a locked PDF file to a translator without also providing the means to open it.)

I wouldn't use that service for any confidential material.

I think it would be better to install password recovery software on your own
machine.

An alternative is to use GUAPDF, which is a downloadable program that operates on your own computer, and doesn't require you to send out potentially confidential files to a third party.

I have used this often, with good results.
I use the free version, which has some restrictions.  There are full-scale paid versions, but I've never had the need.
