Has anyone had experience with Japanese-English Translation Services (JETS)?

They look on the level, but is it common for agencies to recruit new freelancers via a contest?  (I ask as a newcomer to the industry, without long experience in how new hands are normally enlisted.)

HI Kevin,
My experience with this company "Japanese-English Translation Services (JETS)" is as follows. So far I have been extremely disappointed with their lack of any communication.

Their initial response to inquiry about registering my services as a translator on their list of J-E translators was a one line response email with a link to their translation contest page. 

I thought this was rather unusual at first, but I decided to do the trial translation (contest sample translation). I 

Upon delivering the file(s) they have yet to even acknowledge receipt of my delivered files. I would like to ask others on this list to be wary of their practices. I have followed up with them several times with no response.

I will have to call them to find out just what is going on.

Got curious and had alook - have they removed the contest now? All i get
is a white field with "up" and "down" arrows but no content...

I find ths very concerning, because I also operate under the trade name of Japanese-English Translation Services (JETS) (and also Japanese-English Technology Services (JETS)) For the record, be it known that the company in question here has absolutely nothing to to with me.

For some reason the site doesn't display correctly on IE, but looks
fine on Opera and Firefox.

Disclaimer:
Before getting overly excited over the contest (as I did), have a look
at the quotation page and consider what the rates offered to end
clients imply about the rates offered to translators.

HI Kevin,

I had another look at JETS website and noticed they have absolutely no information about where their company office is located and no phone number for which to call. All they provide is an email address, which has no name of any individual.
 Also in the email response I did receive from them recently (4 words and another link to a blog site with equally almost zero helpful information), the person sending the email does not use their name or include any company information. 

I would again like to warn others of the danger of registering with them and receiving payment for any work.

Just to reemphasize (in case somebody missed my earlier post), the Japanese-English Translation Services (JETS) in question here has nothing to do whatsoever with MY Japanese-English Translation Services (JETS) (aka "Japanese-English Technology Services (JETS)") . The other one appears to be located in Japan, where mine is located in New Hampshire. Let's make sure there is no confusion on this.

Hi all,

I'm surprised that people are confident in warning others of "danger" before receiving any work at all from an agency.

To clear things up, although I stopped working with them about a year ago, I have done quite a bit of work with this agency. Their rates are low, but they do pay on time on the last day the month for any and all work done that month, which is great. Many other agencies don't pay until they receive payment from the client, sometimes months later.

I also did their trial, after which it took a few months to receive work from them (perhaps because they had enough translators to cover the amount of work they were processing at the time).

Most of the work I received was research papers from some rather distinguished universities.

If you click on "Our Translators" and scroll down you will find the agency's address and the name of the main (and perhaps only) project manager, Mr. Yoshio Omata, located in Fukuoka.

Yes, he is extremely brief in his correspondences, perhaps because he is busy. Don't expect emotional support from this agency :)
