さんは書きました

細かいといわれるかもしれませんが、
翻訳の観点からは「細かくない」
基礎的な問題だと思いますので投稿します。

gmailから返信するとき、
引用文に「さんは書きました」と付いてくるのですが、
これが気持ち悪くて鳥肌がたちます。

人のメッセージを見ても「気にするまい」と
これまでがまんしてきたのですが、
自分のメッセージに、あんなトンチンカンを付けたままで送信するのは
まっぴらごめんです。

とりあえずは設定言語を英語に切り替えて
乗り切ることにしましたが、
Gmailもなんとかしてほしいですね。

Thunderbirdで変更している人もいるようです。

That just points up one of the many limitations when using a Web
interface rather than a dedicated email client program. Good email
clients let you edit such things, and better ones let you define
different styles for each of your email folders. Most of these
"better" ones, incidently, are Japanese programs like Becky, EdMax,
Hidemaru Mail, and the more recent entry Eclair. (These are all
Windows programs; you'll have a much harder time finding any such
programs for the Mac OS.)

I tried changing the setting to a few different languages, and it
looks like Japanese is the only one that actually sticks that on
there. さんからの引用 may be a better option as a translation for "wrote:",
but wouldn't something like "下記、引用文" be more natural?

On the other hand, is there really any need for anything at all?

If you're going to petition Google to do something, get them to get
rid of it altogether.
