I'm going back to Australia for the break and would like to go "no
mail" while I'm away. Is there anyway to do it without creating a
Google account? Or, do I have to unsubscribe, then resubscribe again
when I come back?

7. How do I unsubscribe from a group?
To unsubscribe or leave a group, go to the group's home page and click
on the "Unsubscribe or change membership" link in the yellow bar at
the top of the page, then click the "Unsubscribe" button on the next
page.
Please note that unsubscribing from a group may mean you'll lose
access to the group's content (if that group only lets members see its
content). If you want to remain a member but don't want to receive
email from the group, select the "No Email" option on the left side of
the "Change my membership" page, then click "Save these settings."

I think George is trying to do this stuff all through e-mail commands
without creating a Google account. I think one would need to create an
account to go to the home page and change one's subscription options there.
I don't personally know if it is possible to manage your subscription
options adequately with e-mail commands alone. In fact, I think the e-mail
commands were the source of considerable problems immediately after we moved
to Google Groups.
It seems to be that even if you use the e-mail commands to subscribe, you
cannot be correctly given posting privileges. This forced us moderators to
manually unsubscribe and add new members who joined by e-mail commands.
I also don't have a quick reference for the e-mail commands for Google
Groups and cannot seem to find one through an, er, Google search.
If someone does manage to find such a beast, please let us know.

Oh, I don't know--I was kind of hoping for a good Wednesday, myself. :)

I considered inserting "Meal," but I'm afraid I'm hungrier than that...
