I think so too, Betsy. It is my experience that this sort of expressions, showing a human side of one party, tends to be stripped dry when conveyed into the other language, not only in the J to E direction, but also in the E to J direction. The translation can comes out with a warped sense of emotion.

This 原因 should not be translated into 'cause' unless one wants to morph this statement into a gotcha!-inducing-self-incrimination. It's not our job as translators to fabricate criminality, which is to be established in due process for the good of the society as a whole.
I read it as: "I'm very sorry to you, as I believe this whole thing transpired from..."
The English language readers may draw their own conclusion with their own confirmation bias, but that's not our problem.
