Kin en paipu?

Hello Honyakers,

Does anyone know what a 禁煙パイプ is? In this light novel I'm working on
I've got a character puffing on one in the designated smoking area of her
university. I'm thinking it's some kind of device to help people stop
smoking? TIA for any help.

Yeah, your understanding seems to be correct. 禁煙パイプ is something to
fool your senses that you're smoking a cigarette, there's also
something called 離煙パイプ that gradually reduces the amount of nicotine,
supposedly weening the smoker off cigarettes over a certain period of
time.

I've never been a smoker, so I'm sure smokers in Japan who have tried
to quit before would be better informed.

I have used one of those before; the one I used didn't contain any nicotine, just some kind of minty herbs.  Supposedly the act of inhaling, even something not containing nicotine, helps with cravings.  I think I used it for a day or two and then went straight back into smoking!

Yes, that is it. A memorable commercial for a famous one of these things
called 禁煙パイポ made by マルマン appears here:

たまたま、同じ『ヨウツべ』を見つけましたね。偶然ですね。

ちょっと脱線ですが、マルマン社の商品名は禁煙『パイプ』ではなく、『パイポ』で
すね。

で、この『パイポ』はどこから来たでしょうか。
この宣伝をはじめて見たときから気になりました。

死語ならぬ死サインというところでしょうか。

「パイポ」の名称の由来は知りませんが（ポパイをひっくり返した？）、一番
有名なパイポは、「パイポパイポパイポのしゅうりんが」ではないかと。

I am pretty sure it does. A single raised little finger like that does mean
a mistress (おんな as they say).

I always wondered about the turn of events in that ad. How exactly did the
mistress get the guy fired? Or did he have to leave the company to pursue
the affair? Why exactly was that? I wonder...

   I'd venture to say it's safe to just call it a "cigarette filter". They're marketed here in the States as "quit smoking cigarette filters", so I'm not sure if the context of your light novel gives any indication that the character is trying to quit or not. Either way, they don't work in the end...

I'm not sure, but I don't think the exact same product is available in the
States. There is apparently something vaguely similar out there called an
"electronic cigarette." See:

I've never heard of these things before, but I guess they are fairly new.
Depending on the effect you want to create in the novel, you could also
change the paipo to Nicorette gum or a nicotine patch or some other smoking
cessation aid.

As a smoker myself, a cigarette filter is something you use when you roll your own cigarettes and stick a filter on yourself, which is different from a kinen pipe.

Interesting. I think I've seen people with these before. Not being a
smoker myself I have little vocabulary in English or Japanese for
this. Everybody's help is invaluable. For this sequence it is
important that the character take puffs on the fake cigarette. I think
I'll explain it once and then just call it a fake cigarette. If anyone
has a better idea, please feel free to post or to contact me off list.

giving up smoking, so perhaps that could work as an alternative. I
think "fake cigarette" would work fine as a translation, though.

Ah yes, how to translate... We have a series of ads on TV here in Oz that I
immediately thought of when seeing that video. Of course, our little finger
doesn't mean a "little lady" but a "little chin-chin."
