Greetings Yakkers,

Does anyone have suggestions for a reasonably priced human transcription service? I have some materials (podcasts, news interviews, other items) that I'd like transcribed, but I don't have time to tackle them myself (and I don't always trust my own ears). I've used services like BLEND in the past, and I was quite satisfied with their services, but with the advent of AI, the quality has gone downhill. I've had far too many arguments with their customer service about their transcribers submitting AI transcriptions to me with either no corrections or painful attempts to make it look like they transcribed it (only to spot the same transcription errors I encountered).

Thank you kindly!

Hi BJ,

I'm not a business, but I used to transcription services back in the States. I also happen to have some time now and was looking to take on a little bit of extra temporary work. If you're interested, I can take on the transcription!

Let me know what you think. I'd be happy to discuss separately in detail about the materials to be transcribed, rates, etc.

Hope to hear from you soon,
Dondré Gumbs

BJ,

Is it Japanese transcription? My husband does that work. Let me know if I can connect the two of you.

My experience with AI transcription has also been very mixed, especially with Japanese.

But Gemini 3.0 Pro Preview released a few weeks ago seems to be a definite improvement. It should be free to try in Google AI Studio. I suggest setting the temperature around 0.6 to reduce the risk of hallucinations. Then just upload an mp3 to it and give it a prompt explaining how you want the audio transcribed. You can specify, for example, how proper names and the like should be rendered, whether or not to include timestamps, etc. It can also distinguish with some degree of accuracy between different speakers.

In the handful of tests I have done so far with Gemini 3.0, it seemed to use either its internal knowledge or web searches to confirm spellings and kanji renditions of proper names. The results were usually quite good, though sometimes it choked midway through the file and just output a bunch of punctuation marks.

If you try this, let us know how well it works for you.

Hello All,

BJ, I’ve forwarded your message to the list to an off-list friend who has years of transcription experience and suggested that he contact you directly to introduce himself and his services and to find out more about your needs. Having seen your message, he indicated that he would be contacting you directly by email.

Good luck,

I have found some online tools that are stunning accurate, even without training. They are able to identify different voices, provide time stamps, etc.

For many years I used a human transcriptionist (my wife) when I translated. Eventually I fired her and replaced her with Dragon Dictate. (She wasn't happy about that at first...) The new online tools are expensive, but far less expensive than human transcriptionists, and nearly as good.
