Is there any English equivalent for シンポジスト. シンポジスト is 和製英語 but there is a word, symposiast. Could anyone help me with this?

Can you place provide context? For example, does this have to do with resin synthesis, or educational meetings, etc?

 

Typically it is useful to see the word in a sentence.

Except that シンポジスト typically refers to not members of the audience
but to symposium participants in the sense of
speakers/presenters/panelists.

Google gives 51,500 results for "symposiast," while シンポジスト gives 518,000. Given that 63.4% of the web is in English and just 1.9% is in Japanese, that's a strong argument to me that people don't really say "symposiast." I'm pretty sure most people would be puzzled by the word. I certainly have never heard it before.*

I commend Herman for going the extra step and thinking about how the Japanese term is actually used. "Symposium attendee" may be safest, but "speaker/presenter/panelist" is how the word is actually used in Japanese. I would say he's right.

I use Jim's dictionary every day, but overall, I don't think conventional J-E dictionaries are very good for exactly this reason. They often fail to apply common sense and just seem to be taking shortcuts, failing to deal appropriately with 和製英語 because it's so much safer and easier to just type the katakana phrase in English. Usually this results in "translations" that slip safely by Japanese proofreaders but don't actually serve the purpose of helping us to understand one another better.

*I initially accidentally sent this message directly to Jim, who shared the following "シンポジスト got a count of 15430 in the (2007) Google Japanese n-gram collection and symposiast got a mere 510 in the English n-gram." This better reinforces the point that "symposiast" is a Japanese term more than an English one.
