Hello Everyone,

I'm struggling to find a standard way to express 東京地方裁判所民事第29部C係 in English. I found a previous poster had a similar issue that went unresolved (see below).

Does anyone have any ideas?

Right now, I'm leaning towards "Clerk C of the 29th Civil Division of the Tokyo District Court" which is similar to the previous poster's proposal...

What do you think?

There are 50 district courts in Japan having territorial jurisdiction over their respective districts, the area of which is identical to that of each prefecture (except Hokkaido, which is divided into four districts). The district courts have 203 branches in total.

係 does not have the meaning of clerk in this case. An appropriate
translation would be "Section" or similar.

quick brown fox jumps over a lazy dog.

I concur with Herman and the others in that 係 does not mean clerk in this case, but rather it refers to a subdivision of the Civil Division (or Civil Affairs Division).

In the English literature, one can find references to this particular subdivision as follows, for example:

Tokyo District Court, Civil Affairs Div. 29-C

Thank you!

Since my original post, I have discovered something written by a colleague of mine that was different again, but I think I will go with Herman's Suggestion.

Best regards,

Having no idea where you are, Robin, I hesitate to suggest you just phone them and ask, but . . .
