I have a need to input hangul from time to time to do web searches, but not
enough of a need to use a Hangul keyboard, so I am looking for a system that
will let me do ローマ字入力 and get Hangul.

Does anyone here have any experience with this possible solution?

What I do for one-off stuff is to mouse on over to
http://translate.google.com, set the "From" language to English and the
"To" language to Korean, type in the romaji in the box, then copy the
hangul that magically appears on the right to the clipboard.

yes, but I don't want a translation, I want to type in hangul.

Yes. Did you try it? You type in Korean romaji on the left, and you get hangul on the right.

Didn't seem to work to well. Maybe it is just my poor romanization, but I
typed in komapsumnida and didn't get anything helpful on the right side of
the screen.

[[Yes.  Did you try it?  You type in Korean romaji on the left, and you get hangul on the right.]]

I just did. It doesn’t seem to work so well for the Korean double consonants, unless I was doing something incorrectly.

I don’t have the time for other tests now, but there are other tricky aspects to Korean that might present problems.

And,I'm sorry for sending a file attachment to the list. I meant to send that to Richard privately.

I think I'll quit while I'm ahead.

If you have a Mac there is a simple solution.
Open your System Preferences -> International ->Input sources
and scroll down to "Hangul" where there are 5 options for input
convention.
You can switch between input sources with the shortcut cmd+space

Selectinging "HNC Romaja" and typing "komapsumnida" gives

코맢숨니다

Is that what you'd expect?

The other 4 options are 2-set Korean, 3-set Korean, 390 Sebulshik and
GongjinCheong Romaja

Hope this helps.

You just put さん on your own name, and you call that "ahead"? <g>

FWIW, if you use Ubuntu/Linux, you can go to System/Preferences/IBus,
and add whatever input system you need.

(Gosh, this could be addictive. I've long been using a web-based
keyboard for occasional Russian searches, but perhaps I needn't
have...)

And if you use Windows, you can go to Region and Language > Text
Services and Input Languages > Add Input Language and select
Korean and/or Microsoft IME.

Have fun,

Well yes, but from what I can see, it doesn't quite work as romaji
nyuuryoku, that is it inputs the characters as they would be on a Korean
keyboard.

I am looking for a solution that would allow me to input roman letters and
get the relevant hangul, using Windows.

Doesn't Windows just do that if you enable Korean as an input language?

In XP: Control panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Languages ->
Details... -> Add...

Not from what I have tried. It appears to input the hangul as they were if
you were typing in the Korean equivalent of kana nyuuryoku.

I'm just guessing here (since I've never even started Korean), but I'd think
that there'd be a keyboard setting somewhere. Or it could be that no one in
Korea types romaji...

I played around a little with the Korean keyboard, and I could not find a
setting that changes to romaji input. For casual input, perhaps the Soft
Keyboard or IME Pad with handwriting recognition might serve without
learning the hangul keyboard.

You could always select Korean and use the on-screen keyboard for
hangul.

I am only aware of a romaja hangul IM on Unix called uim. This hooks into a
few different modules, one of which allows this.
