What does strike me is that two different encodings are used in the same e-mail. The automatically added footer is in Shift-JIS. I guess this could cause problems if the rest of the message is in another encoding.

The problem is that I'm using The Bat!, the newest version of which displays JIS fine (contrary to previous versions), but which also stopped correctly displaying Shift-JIS.

When quoting, the Shift-JIS part disappears...

10 to 1 this has something to do with Shift-JIS.

What I meant was that I'm quite sure this has something to do with Shift-JIS.
