OpenOffice.org, as I have said numerous times, is not viable as a
replacement for MS Office if your customer provides you with Office
documents and expects them to be returned as such.

Some vivid illustrations of the problems are shown in the above article.
And that is English-English. When Japanese enters the picture it gets
worse.

If this problem were solved, Linux would suddenly become a viable option
for translators in most respects. Unfortunately, the OpenOffice people
seem more interested in adding features than in improving compatibility.

I don't know if it's true, but I've always assumed it has been in
Microsoft's interests to delay and hinder compatibility. I know they've
come along some way recently, but it was more that they were dragged
along, wasn't it?

Keith,
The articles you cited merely say that there are security issues with MS Word. That's well known. Was there some other point?

Hi,

I currently use MS Office 2007 (with Service Pack 2) to save Word
files in OpenOffice's format. Converting this way preserves the
formatting a bit better. Unfortunaely, this means that you can't
switch to Linux.

FWIW, after working mainly on Linux for 5 years, I now work on Windows
Vista or Mac OS X 99% of the time.

Regards,
Rodolfo
