Alan,

I think honyaku-...@googlegroups.com does not serve much purpose.

You say you are a nuclear engineering (which I didn’t know, although I knew you a good technical J2E translator). Do you say so because you translated some documents related to the construction of a nuclear power station? Does that make me an expert in communication satellite because I translated technical documents on communication satellites? I don’t think so. I am still a dumb translator.

I noted someone posted a opinion discussing about education since the person believes that the root cause of what happened in Fukushima is the educational problem. I don’t want to discuss about that subject because I don’t know much about it. However, I think discussing such a thing only proves that the particular poster is so clever at best, and does not affect the Japanese educational system or the nuclear power industry in Japan. Such an opinion should be published in Japanese if the writer wants to see some effects. Stating such an opinion in English in a forum like this is like spitting straight upward and see how high it goes. I think it serves no purpose.

I generally feel that this forum, if it is intended to discuss about nuclear power generation in Japan, serves no purpose at all as the participants are basically translators. Translators should discuss, if they want to, only linguistic matters.

Then don´t join...

You mean translators are under some kind of oath that regulates what they do outside translating, including which mailing lists they join?

Strange idea...

I don’t know. If it serves no purpose, then no one will bother writing or making comments here. But we have already seen some good discussions and I hope they will continue. It is only useful if people contribute. I will let the forum continue as long as it is useful.

What I wrote is true. I have translated a large amount of work in the field of nuclear engineering. Over a period of roughly 10 years, I perhaps 75% to 90% of my translation work was translating documents related to the construction of several nuclear power plants in Japan. In college I studied physics and did research on a linear accelerator. This background was very helpful for translating these nuclear engineering documents, although I am of course not an engineer (nuclear or other).

Although I am not an expert in nuclear engineering, this long experience in translating nuclear-related documents probably qualifies me as an expert in the translation of such. I hope that I have not overstated my qualifications.

Unfortunately, the nuclear engineering work largely dried up once the construction of the plants was completed, so I have moved on to other types of translation.

So in a sense, yes, I am still just a dumb translator too.

I joined the group because I was invited and was also curious to see what translators can discuss on subjects that they have little experience and probably no professional knowledge.

I am finding out what you guys are able to discuss and the expected limitation and that’s why suggested the useless of such discussions.

Understand? It’s not that strange if you understand where I am coming from.

Useless? Or futile? Perhaps both. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't or
oughtn't exchange ideas so we can participate in the upcoming political
battles over this sort of thing.

I think so, if I'm understanding where you're coming from.
