I need to do RF communications between two or more laptop computers, up to 1,000 meters. Sending commands from one to the other, back and forth, i.e. bi-directional. I've looked at the APC220 Wireless Serial Data Communication Module USB Converter Adapter ( http://www.suntekstore.com/goods.php?id=14005050&utm_source=gbus ) and it looks like a possibility, although it includes only one USB-TTL Converter, which seems to indicate that it assumes you're communicating between a computer and some other piece of hardware, like a robot, that you'd solder the device to.

Does anyone have any experience with this or similar devices? Or can make some recommendations? Will it be difficult to wire up an extra USB-TTL Converter?

RS-232 to TTL is easy - Sparkfun or maybe Adafruit should have something off-the-shelf.

How would that help with the APC220 Wireless Serial Data Communication Module USB Converter Adapter, which needs an extra USB-TTL Converter. I don't see RS-232 in there anywhere.

Use a directional antenna and stick with standard 802.11 wifi.
There are a number of DIY methods here (pringles can, old DISH antenna, etc) or
search amazon/google shopping for "higain directional wifi antenna"
I found several on amazon for under $100, some will get you 4km or better in that price range.
