Excellent local security conference coming up

For everyone interested in Security I highly recommend going to
Shakacon, Hawaii's own security conference. This is the first time
it's being put on in a couple years. This year it will be at the
Blaisdell.

We're also planning to help SecureDNA (and I've already asked quite a
few of you individually) put the conference on as well.

This sounds like a great conference to attend!  But it's not cheap -- just the two-day conference is $225 (it was $99 two years ago).  Any training (TBD) is additional.

I wonder if they'll eventually offer a group rate...  Or even a kama-aina rate :-)

Rant on.
Worst web site I've seen in quite a while. Worth looking just to
cringe. The graphics are nice, but to get any info you have to enable
javascript and click. Then you must click again to get the info out of
your face. Much info just missing (including cost!?), nothing obvious.
A complicated solution where simplicity would have been ideal.

Not sure why I am in such a bad mood and feel the need to share here.

Is Shakacon a technical convention or a lots-of-talks convention?
Their call for papers doc gives the impression that I'll be seeing a
lot of the government's "big plans" will be to combat the "cyberwar"
rather than, let's say, a talk on the technical details of stuxnet.
I know it's not one of the larger security conferences but I would
like to see some black hat stuff there. They mention contests but are
unclear on that. Will it be a capture-the-flag event or best
obfuscated code competition? That's unknown.
I'm not an ultra-technical person but I would like to see some
technical talks. Or even if they're not highly technical I really just
want to see a talk that makes me go back into paranoia mode. You know
the kind.
Does anyone have experience with the previous events?

Also, did anyone else notice that they're on IIS 6?

Does "lots-of-talks" mean FUD/posturing and less details? I don't know if 0-day will drop during ShakaCon, but I expect it overall to go deeper than the local ISSA conference. I'd like to think of it as a mini DEF CON, during the week, without the lines.

A lot of the cost of the con goes into paying for hotel and travel for the invited speakers. (http://shakacon.org/cfp.txt)

When I last asked, there was desire to have a CTF and lockpick village, but it would depend on having the resources to organize them.

I'd say it is a technical convention (especially when compared to ISSA
which is the other local security conference). For more proof of this
check out the titles and descriptions of talks from last year
(http://shakacon.org/2009/).

There have previously been quite a decent amount of 0-days released so
I think that there is a fair chance of a new one being released this
year.

From what I understand there will be a capture-the-flag and a lock
picking village.

Haven't been myself, but see the link above to the previous years
descriptions. Although I know that Tim Newsham has been there before.

I'm personally really looking forward to attending this year.

I think we might be able to get a discount for HI Capacity members,
especially if we buy as a group and/or help help out with the
conference.
