Wow, I've got over 35 years experience as a software engineer and can't find a job, because employers want 3 - 5 years experience in precise software technologies and have no clue as to the value of an experienced engineer. And you're saying that these people will be employable after 12 WEEKS of training.

Hi all,

I'm a longtime supporter and member, although I left Honolulu last year.  Congrats on growing HI Cap from its origins at unconferenz to what it is today!

I'm starting a new programmer training program called Catalyst.  We help our students go from zero to employable over 12 weeks of in-person training in San Francisco.  We opened applications last week and are trying to get the word out.  If you're interested in the program, or know someone who would be, please pass on my contact info: sh...@catalystclass.com

Mahalo,
Shawn

If the courseware covers the full stack of Web-based software development, I think it's entirely possible to meet the "Employable" goal in 12 weeks. Probably not a "Senior" level position, but enough to get into growing companies at an entry-level position and get promoted from within.

In Hawaii's case.. If any organization would train someone with HTML5, CSS3, JQuery(AJAX) and basic Ruby on Rails 3.2 skills, I'd take a serious look at their students' resumes and pass them around to colleagues if I have nothing immediately available.  I'd hire or contract a student rather quickly if they can also demonstrate a mastery of Authentication and Authorization toolkits, or they have a particular aptitude for popular Regression Testing frameworks.

I applaud Catalyst's efforts, and look forward to seeing their results.

Yes. Unfortunately employable these daze means you can be a script kiddie doing ruby/python and not know a lick about support/maintenance, documentation and Software Engineering.
And if you do know those things, you cost too much to be employable.... and probably know too much to work xtralong hours for the glory of doing web development.

I too would probably like the idea of having someone teach students how to code Web based language, since some students want to get a head start in learning the language. As for me, I'm one of those people.

Hey all,

Laurence -- thanks for the kind words!

Roger -- sorry to hear about that.  I have to admit I was skeptical about this kind of program as well, but empirically, it works.  (We're not the first program of this kind -- the first had a 92% hire rate in their first class.)

I see a couple of referrals from HI Cap already -- thanks!

One of our former members is in a similar program right now. She's doing Hackbright Academy and loves it. She's learning a lot of stuff she wouldn't learn if she was doing it on her own.
