Dear fellow film makers, sorry for quite a long absence since the formulation of the group, though i have always been following up on the groups progress, of which i wish to congratulate all for the will and determination to move on in our endeavour to realise our visions for the film industry in Solomon Islands.

I just wish to announce to all members that the Culture Department, through the Ministry of Culture & Tourism is planning to produce a feature film based on a traditional/ custom story from Areare in Malaita - "Rua Susu'ire"(Two Brothers). This is not a new idea which i proposed to the defunct Festival of Pacific Arts Committee back in 2009, for the production of a feature film to enable us to participate in the Feature Film Category of the Film Festival. Now I am bringing up this proposition again to the Ministry and have already recieved green light to go on with the production. The film script is ready, which I myself prepared following a radio drama production of the same play produced and aired at the SIBC for the "Culture Beat" Programme in 2009.

We will be putting out a public advert for Media and local film companies to submit "Expressions of Interest" for the production of the film, however, i have decided to consult with the association on this matter to get a better idea on the best way to move forward with this production. I will be taking this cautiously as i do not want this project to fail as this may be the only chance to open the eyes of our people to the potentials of the film industry in Solomon Islands, as well as to the outside world. Government funding is rarely available for such initiative but thanks to the recently launched 'Solomon Islands National Cultural Policy' which paves way to realise such an undertaking, especially in the promotion and strengtening the Creative Industry sector to becoming a vibrant economic contributor to this country.

My main concern at the moment is on equipment and local expertise. I wish to know what film equipment is there and who owns what. Secondly, the status of our local experts in the film making industry (including those with substantial experiences without formal qualifications) to see whether we can handle this locally or will need overseas assistance. i am prepared to seek assistance from Volunteer organisations for film experts to assist in this production should we need so. However, I am prioritising local engagement to acquire a more sense of ownership and national pride in such a kind of project.

As such i wish to have this issue part of the group's agenda in the next meeting so we can discuss further.

Thank you very much.

Cheers

Thank you Dennis for bringing this information and opportunity to the group.

I was going to suggest we meet again on Wednesday May 8, as we also
have a colleague who is in Honiara just for that one night only and I
invited him to give a short presentation to all the filmmakers group.

The man is Oscar winning French cinematographer Laurent Chalet
(http://www.laurent-chalet.com/) who Adilah is directing for the film
The Test which we talked about at the last meeting.

Best wishes,
Anouk

Hey Dennis.

That's really great news. Great work.

I agree that you should prioritise local people in the production but can I suggest that as the Solomon Islands has not produced a feature film before, and because this is such a huge task, at the very least it would be wise to seek an experienced feature film producer to be involved with advising on developing production plans and processes at the outset. I would also suggest that such a person could also provide insight and linkages to the international sales and distribution networks that will be imperative to the success of the film at the end point. This would also be a great opportunity for a local producer to be mentored in the highly specialised role that a feature film producer plays.

Good luck!

Hi all,

I am agree with William to have a mentor from a film producing back ground to help in producing this film project. It will be very interesting to learn from him or her.

Thank you all for your comments and advises. I also certainly agree with Billy in acquiring professional support from abroad. I am also particularly concerned with the area of animation and special effects because that will be certainly needed according to the script.

Billy, I maybe asking you again to come and assist in this project but depends on your commitments for this year.

I may sound a little too ambitious on this project but I believe we can do it... if we start now.

I am proposing for an urgent meeting this month to discuss this issue. 15th or 16th April is fine with me. This meeting is voluntary.

Thank you all

Dennis

Thanks Dennis. As much as a return to the wonderful Solomon Islands this year is an enticing prospect, I am really not the right person to assist on this project as I have absolutely no feature film experience. However, I would be happy to assist in any way I can with making contact with others in the Australian film industry - if indeed you decide that is the best way to proceed.

Good luck with the meeting and I look forward to hearing about it further.

Excellent idea Billy. You may need to see the script and see what and who's best to assist. Otherwise, me and members of the association will propose ideas on how to move on with this project in due course.

Thanks

Dennis
