Thank you all for all your enthusiasm and attention all week. It can
be a long week, especially in the summer, but everyone hung in there
through it all.

I know that it may take a weekend or more to 'defuse' from such an
active week. If you get back to looking at some of the activities or
technology and some things just don't make sense, let me know and I'll
work with you.

Also, if you find any good resources, tips, equipment or anything else
that would be worth sharing feel free to share it with the group.
That is what this group is for; to collaborate with colleagues.
Please take advantage of it.

I'll be in touch with you all in the coming week, but for now I just
wanted to say thanks for making this such a fun workshop!

Hi All,
What a great week! I love acquiring new teaching tools.
Maybe someone can help me with this:
I've created a google site as an port of entry.
I want to then have 5 separate documents that can be accessed from my
site (I've already created 5 documents on google docs) one for each
science class.

Right now I can't link the docs to the site. ( I'm just not familiar
with the process)

I'm hoping that throughout the year I (and my kids) can add notes and
hints about the topics we cover in each class.
Also I want to link forms and quizzes to the site (docs?)

Can anyone walk me through this?
(Are you out there Doug and Melissa?)
Thanks a mil,
Rich

Rich,

I'll take the first stab at it, but if Doug or Melissa want to throw
in their explanations they will be very helpful as well.

Starting out I will assumed you are on your website and logged in.
1. Click "Edit Page" at the top right.
2. Type a word or phrase to represent the name of the document you
want linked such as "Grade 7 Science" or whatever.
3. Highlight that word or phrase.
4. In the Google toolbar click "Link". "Link" and the Google toolbar
should be located just above the page you are editing and not at the
top of the browser.
5. A new window will open up. This window will have 2 tabs on the
left side. One will say "Existing page" the other "Web address" click
on "Web address" and one box will appear with the prompt "Link to this
URL:". In this box paste the URL or web address of your Google form
or Google Doc or web address or whatever.
6. Click "ok"
7. Click "Save" at the top right

To get the URL of your Google Doc or Google form:
1. Open http://docs.google.com/#all
2. Double click on the Doc you want to link to.
2A. If you want to link to the Form for this Doc click on "Form" and
"Go to live form"
3. The URL is the web address that is in the browser address field.
Copy it using Ctrl+c and paste it, following the directions above,
using Ctrl+v.

Thanks Greg!
It worked beautifully.
Next I would like to keep some docs on the site (like grades)
unaccessible to the students. Can I do this or do I have to have them
on a another google site?
Thanks,
Rich

Rich,

Excellent!

You ask a great question about security. I think that unless you
"Share" the doc with someone it is safe. Here is what Google says:
http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/infrastructure_security.html

Basically the document's address is what keeps it safe. The URL is
too complex to discover and additionally if someone does not have
permission to view your Doc, they will have to wait to get your
permission. It sounds like many companies are keeping sensitive
documents in Google without and leaks.

So a Doc with student grades will appear in your Docs Home but will
not be accessible to anyone else unless they are invited.
