All,
I was visiting Derek Skoldberg's class yesterday and he did the survey
for the Human Genetics project with his class. We ran into some
hurdles trying to create charts that illustrated the comparison
between dominant and recessive traits well. The data sets are so
large that it takes a little time sorting out the data before you can
create functional graphs from it.
I uploaded a file called traitdata.S09.xls to the Google group so that
you could see a couple of ideas that I put together today. The first
sheet has the raw data, the second sheet has all the traits in bar
graphs and the third sheet has the individual traits data in pie
charts. This might give you some chart ideas as well as an idea of
what it takes to filter and sort the raw data. Additional comparisons
can be made but each comparison requires a specific sorting and
filtering pattern.
I can't think of an easier way to collect or present the data to make
it easier to sort, but if anyone has suggestions I am open to them. I
can create charts like these and put them up with the data sets, but I
think that a number of teachers have students create their own charts
and I think that can be a valuable opportunity.
If you have used the genetics project to create charts let me know if
you have any suggestions.
Greg
