Post Graduate Program 2017-2018

‘The Road to Clinical Mastery’

Join us for the 2017-2018 CCHM Post Graduate Program! The Post Graduate Program is open to all professional Homeopaths and Naturopaths. Lectures are offered over nine weekends between September 2017 and June 2018. Upon completion of the program, registrants receive a certificate of completion and qualify for CEU credits. CCHM and TSHM graduates will be awarded a Fellowship designation and the use of credential FCHM.

Clinical mastery is a goal all Homeopaths aspire to but many find difficult to achieve. The purpose of this course is to inspire confidence and increase success in the consulting room, as well as provide an anchor for newer practitioners. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own difficult cases for assistance. It is intended as an extension to , and a deepening of existing clinical skills following classical Hahnemannian principles of Homeopathic case-taking, analysis and case management plus enhancing familiarity with the Homeopathic repertory. Case-taking techniques and methodology will be emphasized, as Hahnemann says “a case well-taken is half-cured.”

This course provides a rare opportunity to discuss your own difficult cases with the masters and your peers  providing you with knowledge that takes years of experience to obtain.

"I loved the Post Graduate Course.  You have the opportunity to continue to learn, keep in contact with other homeopaths, and look for guidance from the teachers to address difficult cases, all without the pressure of exams; just for the joy of learning.  It was a great experience for me." --- Patricia Ceciarelli, HOM, DCHM (hons), FCHM

"This post-grad course provides a solid foundation in the fundamentals of homeopathic materia medica, and case-taking, while also exploring more advanced topics such as the treatment of mental disease. I recommend this course to any naturopathic doctor who would like to expand their practice in homeopathy."  --- Daniel Lander, ND

"The post-grad program is advanced study which not only expanded my foundation knowledge but allowed me to gain practical case taking experience that likely would have taken many years to experience in private practice. As such, I believe the program 'fast forwards' the student's abilities and strengths to assess a case and arrive at a good remedy choice. The subjects covered are vital for practising homeopaths, and the opportunity to bring our own cases for discussion on those subjects was golden. Thanks to all the lecturers for a wonderful year."  --- Linda Taylor, HOM, DCHM (Hons.), FCHM

Post Graduate Homeopathic Program 2017-2018 Lecture Topics

Sept. 30       The Homeopathic Treatment of Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Lisa Decandia HOM, DSHomMed, RcsHom, MSc

Autistic Spectrum Disorder is on the rise! A new survey (CDC, USA) says that 1 in every 45 children have or will have some form of Autism.
In this full day seminar, we will discuss common signs and symptoms of Autism; the evolution of Autism, and possible aetiologies for this disorder. We will also discuss, Asperger’s syndrome and Pervasive Development Disorder.
In order for us to understand the journey, that these children and their parents travel; we will review a variety of treatments and therapies (i.e. supplements, cognitive behaviour therapy, and detoxification).
Then we will focus on useable homeopathic symptoms, how children portray these symptoms, viable rubrics to use and search the Materia Medica while creating a solid homeopathic treatment plan.
Remedies that will be discussed include: Silica, Baryta-Carbonica, Agaricus, Bufo Rana, Tuberculinum, Lycopodium, Carcinosen, and Calcarea Carbonica. If time allows, we will discuss more potential remedies and touch on some concepts from CEASE Therapy (Smits, T.)
We will utilize Video and Paper Cases to enhance our understanding and learning.

Oct. 1       Practical Knowledge and Skills for Successful Case Management, Lecture 1 of 3
Dr. John Millar BSc., ND, DHANP, CCH, HOM

This will be a case centred presentation. The purpose of this presentation is to fine-tune and enhance, the knowledge, skills, and judgement of practitioners through the use of examples of cured cases. Participants are encouraged to bring and present cases that they are having trouble with, so that through a guided discussion all participants might benefit and acquire new skills and knowledge.

Learning objectives:
1) Enhance and sharpen case taking skills: the art of ignorance
2) Case analysis: developing the genius
3) Selecting appropriate rubrics
4) Using the repertory to study materia medicae; the use of extractions
5) Remedy relationship; complements, antidotes, followers, and inimicals; how to develop your own list. Remedy relations are important to understand as they can be used to manage the case in a more efficient and effective manner
6) Remedy reactions: how to assess the reaction to the remedy.  There are a variety of responses to the remedy.  Each reaction type must be clearly understood as it will dictate how to proceed.  We can’t know where to go next if we don’t understand where we have been
7) Increase the perceptual frameworks to perceive without prejudice
8) To understand when a remedy is needed and when it is not
9) To learn the when, where, why and how of nosodes including bowel nosodes, as intercurrent.

Nov. 11        Disease towards Health: The Art of Restoring Ecological Balance in a homeopathic practice, Lecture 1 of 5
Dr. Gary Hardy DC, ND, FCAH, CCH, HOM

The foods we eat have changed dramatically over the last 60 years, with the growth of fast foods, processed foods, genetically modified foods, and high sugar intake. Our genes do not necessarily cause an imbalance on their own, but can be positively or negatively affected by our microbiome, our environment, diet, exercise and lifestyle patterns.
To restore health we must become consciously aware of what we eat, when we eat, and re-learn to listen to our body. Gone are the days we grew up and died in the same place. We are now a blend of different ethnicities. In the past, societies would hunt and gather in their vicinity and their genome would slowly evolve to accommodate the stresses of their environment. Many of us being a blend of different ethnicities, living in environments, climates different than our parents or grandparents, creates challenges for our blended genome to adapt, let alone changes in foods.
For thousands of years, humankind has relied on the complexity of whole foods, plants and animals to supply our bodies with vibrant health. Our food supply has changed and it is important to understand the impact these changes have had on our health. In Hahnemann’s time, infectious disease was the number #1 cause of disease and death, while now noncommunicable diseases account for the majority of disease’s and death. Science has shown that most disease’s today are a result of sustained internal inflammation, and that the complex interaction between our diet, our genes, and our microbiome influences our susceptibility to develop disease.
This course will look at how diseases such as autoimmune disease develop, and provide you with the tools to make powerful restorative changes in your patients along with homeopathic treatment. You will learn about the microbiome, epigenetics, increased intestinal permeability, zonulin, the blood brain barrier, and how dietary influences can treat the conditions seen in your offices. We will do cases of autoimmune diseases in class, the dietary changes involved, and the results obtained using both dietary and homeopathic treatment.

What exactly is Homeopathy? What are trying to match. Is it the mental/emotional core of the patient? Is it a perceived “essence”? Is it a known pathology?   How can we arrive at some level of certainty sufficient for prescribing?
In Aphorism 153 Hahnemann tells us
“In this search for a homoeopathic specific remedy, that is to say, in this comparison of the collective symptoms of the natural disease with the list of symptoms of known medicines, in order to find among these an artificial morbific agent corresponding by similarity to the disease to be cured…”.  So the match lies in a comparison of available disease symptoms of the patient to symptom lists of proven medicines.  How often do we do as Hahnemann asked and search out this comparison in a primary source Materia Medica? (Hahnemann or T F Allen).
In this course our goal is to acquire the skill sets needed to use our most reliable sources with an efficient workflow and to develop that inner sense that know when a simillimum has been found.
We will be using a “Boot Camp” approach solving cases from the Masters-using our computer programs to the utmost in sculpting out all the needed skills.  You will  hone Repertory skills. Learn important differential materia medica. Become comfortable navigating Hahnemann, Allen and Hering.  In being comfortable doing all this you will be on the road to truly mastering Homeopathy.

Mar. 4        Science, Energy, Healing and Homeopathy
Kanan Patel HOM, PhD, MSc, BSc

Science, Energy, Healing and Homeopathy: four very powerful words individually and collectively exponentially more powerful.
The goal of this discussion is to explore these four powerful themes and their inter-relationships. Specifically, to gain an understanding of modern scientific thought, the place of Homeopathy within that framework, to explore the concept of energy and the role of energy in healing within modern as well as traditional systems of medicine.  This will be accomplished by addressing the following:
• Understanding what science is by reviewing the history of (European) natural science, following its evolution and implications
• High light accepted theories in the physical sciences including the equivalence of mass and energy, fields, quanta and other exotic concepts
• Review the idea of  ‘The Scientific Method’, the current and accepted procedure that characterizes the study of natural science
• Consider types of study designs such as meta-analysis, randomized controlled trials, double blind studies, cross-sectional studies, etc.
• Consider reductionism  versus holism -- two different ways to look at the world that have a huge implication on what is considered scientific
• Review energy as a healing agent: in modern conventional medicine (e.g.: laser, radiation, light therapy) as well as traditional medicine (Acupuncture, Homeopathy)
• Review some theories and key studies of the mechanisms and efficacy of Homeopathy
• Consider: the emergence of placebo study in universities
• Ponder mental/thought energy in healing -- energy has no boundaries

June 3        Homeopathic Approach to the Acute Dental Patients
Dr. Gary Fortinsky DDS

Dental complaints are a common experience in our society and the debilitating nature of the pain is ripe for homeopathic treatment. The challenge is; what questions do you ask the patient? What remedies do you consider and why? What posology do you prescribe? When should a follow-up be done and what is the significance of the answer? When do you need to change remedy? When is the homeopathic treatment complete and when should dental treatment be initiated? Many dental complaints are mechanical in nature but the intense response of the vital force to the insult begs us to prescribe a remedy to bring healing to our patients. If the homeopath does not assist the individual, then they will most likely take painkillers as a crutch, and then antibiotics with all the physiological ramifications to the microbiome. The homeopath is in a position to bring relief to the suffering, and return life to a level of normalcy. Tooth abscesses, gum abscesses, oral viral infections, pain after extraction, infections after extraction, jaw pain; all can have their progression altered with a carefully and accurately prescribed simillimum. Using real clinic cases, all these conditions will be presented and treated using homeopathy so all the above questions on case taking, case analysis, remedy choice, and follow-up will be understood.
