HEAD INJURIES

Anytime there is a loss of consciousness after
a head injury there is a danger of brain damage.
A concussion is usually the result of a blow to
the head. The symptoms may include temporary loss
of consciousness, shallow breathing, a cold,
clammy, pale skin, nausea and temporary loss of
memory. a compression is a serious condition
which involves internal bleeding causing pressure
inside the skull. It may develop as much as 24
hours after the injury. The pupils of the eyes
may dilate to different degrees, breathing become
noisy, the pulse may be full but slow, there may
be fever without sweat, one side of the body may
become paralyzed, and the person may become
unconscious. Check the victim's pulse and
respiration and use artificial respiration and
CPR if necessary. If they are unconscious put
them in the recovery position (refer) and treat
them for shock (refer). Call the emergencies.
Monitor the victim's pulse and respiration.

Materia Medica

ARNICA (3). Give Arnica immediately to relieve
shock, pain, and swelling accompanying the
injury. Helpful in reabsorbing blood within the
skull to prevent compression. Arnica fears being
approached. If there is sudden onset of fever,
restlessness, fear and panic give ACONITE (1) instead.

BELLADONNA (2). Useful when there is much heat,
redness, throbbing, and fullness in the head. The
face is red, flushed, hot, pupils dilated, and
there may be twitching of the muscles. The victim
may become delirious, frantic, furious, and even
bite, strike and try to escape. Sudden outcries.
The head pain is worse < light, noise, jar, lying
down and better > by pressure and sitting semi-erect.

CICUTA VIROSA (2). Convulsion from concussion to
the brain. Sudden shock go through the head.
Stares persistently at objects. Useful in
spasmodic nervous disorders, tetanus, epilepsy,
and convulsions after head injuries. Vertigo
after head injuries. Hemorrhages from the ears.
Everything seem strange and terrible, confounds
the present with the past, feels like a child.
Worse < from touch, draughts, concussion, tobacco smoke.

HELLEBORUS (3). Sees, hears, and taste
imperfectly with muscular weakness the move
toward complete paralysis. Complete
unconsciousness. Eyeball turn upward, squinting,
vacant look, falling of the jaw, chewing motions,
automatic motions of one arm and leg. Worse <
evening until morning, from uncovering.

HYPERICUM (3). Useful in fractured skulls with
concomitant injuries to the spine. Bone splinter.
Spasms or epilepsy after head injuries. Worse <
closed room, touch Better > bending the head back.

NATRUM SULPH (3). Ill-effects of falls and head
injuries. Vertigo after head injuries. Mental
symptoms and personality changes after head
injuries. The person may become suicidal, must exercise restraint.

*********

*Always consult a doctor regarding a head injury
- and if you´ve been diagnosed as having a concussion.

Cocculus is the leading remedy for dizziness
after a head injury. Symptoms include feeling
like the world is spinning and nausea when moving
around. Take the 6, 12, or 30th potency every 15
minutes the first few hours after an injury.
Then, take a dose every 2 hours for severe pain -
or every 4 hours for less severe pain.
Discontinue taking when pain becomes mild or
non-existant. *People treating old head injuries
should take the 30th potency 3 times a day for 2
days, or fewer doses if the symptoms disappear.

Healing with Homeopathy:
Think Homeopathy for Sports Injuries
by Judyth Reichenberg-Ullman, ND, LCSW
and Robert Ullman, ND

[Some material from this article is excerpted
from our book, Homeopathic Self-Care: The Quick
and Easy Guide for the Whole Family, Prima Publishing, 1997]

Try It and You Will Be Convinced
Arnica montana has undoubtedly won more converts
to homeopathy than any other medicine. Pop some
Arnica pellets as soon as possible after a
strain, sprain, or bruise and you will likely be
singing its praises. The response is usually
swift and impressive, whether or not you use a
topical preparation or take it internally. Do
remember not to apply Arnica, but rather take it
internally, if there is an open cut or wound
because a rash can occur in some sensitive individuals.

Once you've had success with Arnica, which, in
our experience, is pretty much guaranteed, then
you will want to venture further afield and try
homeopathic self-care for other acute injuries.
Once you are hooked, you'll definitely want a
self-care kit. The medicines are a lot cheaper
than buying them individually and last for life,
unless, of course, you use them up, which you
will do with Arnica once friends and family know
how effective it is. For more longstanding sports
injuries or ones that are not easily amenable to
self-treatment, find a homeopath. The likelihood
of your finding rapid relief and avoid having an
acute sports injury become chronic, as well as
for ongoing physical therapy and surgery, is generally quite high.

How and When to Take the Homeopathic Medicines for Sports Injuries

* Take three pellets of 30C every four hours until you see improvement.
* If you see no improvement after three doses, take a different medicine.
* After you first notice improvement, take
another dose only if symptoms begin to return.
* Lower potencies (6X, 6C, 30X) may need to
be taken more often (every hour).
* Higher potencies (200X, 200C, 1M) may need
to be taken only once unless symptoms definitely return after being better.

Indications for The Most Common Medicines for Sports Injuries
Below we provide user-friendly information about
what to take and when. The bolded information
shows you the most common and important features
of each medicine. In Homeopathic Self-Care, this
information is illustrated with charts and icons.
This format is not quite as thorough but should
help you self-treat a number of acute sports
injuries. Feel free to use your standard
first-aid measures along with homeopathy. Just
avoid liniments, mineral ice, and therapeutic
ultrasound, which may prevent the homeopathy from working.

For chronic injuries, a much more extensive
interview is needed along with periodic followups
for at least six months. In this case, consult a professional homeopath.
