Monday

The tentative plan for the week is on April 13 th , Monday morning at
6:00 AM or so, go get tents and set them up right on Founders lawn.
This would be a hush, hush thing so that when students get up to go to
class on Monday morning, they have no idea why there are tents on the
lawn and to create a buzz, as well as getting students to camp out
with us. This will be called tent city to represent what it is like
not have the comfort of being able to sleep and reside within one’s
dorm, as well as representing the presence of the increase of
homelessness in Greensboro . We would also like to have several
homeless people come and join Guilford students in camping out.
Students who camp out will have to wear the same clothing all week and
will not be allowed to enter their dorm room to shower, brush their
teeth, etc. and find other places to do this. For dinners, students
will dumpster dive. On Monday night, the Hunger Banquet will take
place as well. The Hunger Banquet works to demonstrate how power,
money and resources are unequally distributed throughout the world
through an actual dinner. Those who reside in the upper class are
fed spaghetti and allowed to sit at a table. Those who are in the
middle class are fed rice and beans and allowed to sit at chairs, and
those who are in the lower class are served a spoonful of rice and
have to sit on the floor. This takes place during dinner time so
although students cannot even begin to compare to what it feels like
to go hungry every night, they are able to experience a slight degree
of hunger because very few end up leaving with satisfied and full
stomachs. This event works to give students a better understanding
of the problems of hunger and poverty and motivate and inspire
students to do something about it

Tuesday

Tuesday there will be a screening of several clips from the Bum Fights
videos and then a panel discussion on brutality against the homeless,
as well as police brutality and criminalization of the homeless will
take place. Bum Fights began as several men fighting and inflicting
violence and other acts of brutality against homeless in exchange for
money, alcohol and other incentives. These videos used to be
distributed through Block Busters and other video outlets, however,
they have been banned in several countries and in several states
because of their violent nature and many copy cat videos have been
spurred from these videos. I would like to invite local law
enforcement officials who have dealt with brutality against the
homeless, local advocate for the homeless, Michele Forrest, as well as
faculty members (I was thinking Barbara Lawrence, Sherry Giles, etc.

Wednesday

The faces of homelessness panel would take place at 7:30 (location
still undetermined) with the director of the National Coalition for
the Homeless present, as well as several speakers from DC to reside on
the panel and 1-2 local speakers within Greensboro on the panel as
well. The Faces of Homelessness Panel has people who are either
currently homeless or formerly homeless to speak about their stories:
where they come from, how they became homeless, and what they are
doing now. It puts a face to homelessness because the images that we
are shown within the media are still negative and false depictions of
who is homeless and why they are homeless. Many people are unaware
that there are many homeless families, children, foster children who
have “aged out” of the system, veterans, people with untreated mental
illnesses, etc. The panel is a powerful demonstration of
deconstructing these negative stereotypes.

Thursday

We have decided to put on a protest on Thursday, April 16th
tentatively set for 2 pm? On April 1 st , the homeless will find
themselves being kicked out of the shelters. I would like to see
other schools, students, and the homeless community actively involved
in this march and protest to MAKE SOME NOISE that we- as homeless
person, as students, as teachers, as people with this community- will
not tolerate any group of people to be neglected anymore, that we will
no longer wait for changes to be made and are not asking for changes
to be made, but demanding them. Homelessness has already been on the
rise in Greensboro , especially because of the economy and the City
Council is continuing to neglect the homeless community.

Friday

Throughout the whole week we would have various boxes set up for
students to drop off items that they no longer want, because this is
nearing the time of the year when students will be clearing out their
closets because of the close date to school ending, and the items and
cans collected would be dropped off at Urban Ministry later on in the
day. The cafeteria has offered to donate hot food to Leslie’s House
(a woman's homeless shelter) and that would be delivered. I was also
thinking of maybe having a volunteer fair so that students know where
they can channel their energy to help end homelessness.

All of these events are not only educating students, but working to
create empathy towards the homeless by putting an actual face and
experience to the issues of homelessness, and urging students to
action. All of the events to take place are to urge students to take
action within the Greensboro community, because whether or not we
permanently reside in Greensboro , while we are here at school, this
is just as much our community as anyone else.

Paul, who was the "can I call you" email for?  It went to the whole listserv.  Was it for all of us, or someone in particular?

Thanks,

Reception for Homeless and Friends Art Exhibit – Monday, March 30, 5:30 pm

As a closing ceremony to the Winter Series, Greensboro Public Library is hosting a reception for the Homeless and Friends Art Exhibit that will be on display at Central Library through the end of March.   The artworks are exhibited in the stairwell and second floor display cases of Central Library.  The reception will be held Monday, March 30, at 5:30 pm in the Nussbaum Room at Central Library, 219 N. Church Street.  All are welcome to attend.

The exhibit includes paintings and sketches, woodworks, jewelry and sculpture from found objects, and decorated walking sticks.

Winter Series is a community building program that is done in conjunction with Food Not Bombs to serve homeless people that are in the library everyday.   On Monday nights during the winter months, the meal is served inside and programs are planned according to the interest of the participants.

Hi Paul I just got your email.  The best email to reach me is at carrin...@guilford.edu because this email has not been working.  I can call you/you can call me at 12:00 tomorrow.  Tomorrow I am literally in classes, tutoring at the Glenhaven multicultural afterschool tutorial center, and more classes from 10 in the morning until 10:10 at night, however, I have an hour free from 12-1 for the whole day.  We could talk and discuss more.  My number is 207 400 7457.  Thank you so much!
Signed Sincerely,
Juliet Carrington

I went by Guilford College around 8 this evening and no one was
around, no tents were set up, and people had no idea if it was going
on. Is the Homeless Awareness stuff still going on?
