I have a NOS Motorola speaker mic. around here somewhere so that is most likely what I'll use. It has a 3.5mm and 2.5mm moulded plug made for use with handheld radios. Plus it has a speaker well designed for use in high noise environments.
Other than that it would be a cakewalk to "roll your own" mic. similar to the one sold by Doug Hendricks. I'd use an electret element swiped from an old telephone answering machine and a push-button from same. Maybe housed in a tube from an cast-off ball-point pen?
One thing to consider for a speaker is the "Boom Cube". Approximately a 1" plastic cube, it's a self-containe amplifier/speaker with a built-in Li-Ion battery which recharges via a supplied USB cable. It's meant for amplifying the output from iPods and cell-phones and develops a surprising sound level. The input is a 3.5mm stereo phone plug at the end of a ~2" umbilical cord. The one I bought was about $11 USD out the door. I didn't expect the frequency response to be very good and it isn't but at approx. 300 to 4500 Hz at the roll-off points, IMO it does just fine for ham use. Plus I didn't notice any distortion but I certainly don't have audiophool's ear, HA!
