The LM386 has some tricks that can give it even more gain. A detailed

This doesn't use the usual capacitor between pins 1 & 8 but does have a
few other bits. I've had good success with it.

Another thing worth pursuing is rx muting as my rig has a horrible clunk
and feedback. A possibility is a FET switch on the AF amp input, though
the above refers to a possible use of Pin 7.
