On Saturday, April 20th at 10 am HGF member Robert Howard will conduct
a workshop on how to build an inexpensive, versatile and durable row
cover that can provide frost, wind, and hail protection, depending on
what you cover the frame with. The basic material is an $8 sheet of
7×3 1/2 foot concrete reinforcing mesh available at Home Depot and
Lowe‘s. The cover can be designed with legs that allow you to raise it
as the garden grows and can be covered with plastic for frost
protection, row cover cloth to keep pests out and lessen wind damage,
or doubled up deer netting to provide hail protection with minimal
loss of sunshine.

This workshop will be held in the food garden of Foothills Unitarian
Church at 1815 Yorkshire Avenue, Fort Collins. Robert will demonstrate
the construction of a frame and provide instructional materials to
guide you in building your own covers at home. RSVP by Monday, April
15th, please. If there are not enough responses, we will cancel the
workshop. So please get your RSVPs in.

I highly recommend this workshop -- I took it two years ago and was just out admiring my covers the other day! I have one for my 4x4 square foot garden and one for my 2x4 bed. I put all kinds of different materials on them depending on what I need. Last summer, I got a few extra weeks out of my lettuce by putting the covers raised up a foot or two, and then putting a thin weed cloth over the front for partial shade on just the first two rows of my square.
