Lows are predicted in the mid 20s tomorrow night and Saturday night and I'm wondering what I need to do with my gardens. I only have one bed of lettuce and it's pretty easy to throw a tarp over my wire frame. (the same one I made with the design from this group many years ago!)  That should be enough, shouldn't it?

I'll harvest some spring flowers, but I suppose there is nothing I can do about my lilacs which are quite tall. They are in full bloom. Should I cut a bunch of the blossoms and give away to friends and neighbors or is it better for the plant to leave them on and let the freeze hit the flowers? They will be wet from tonight's rain but I still don't think that will be enough since it's predicted to get down to something like 24° .

Thanks,

Lisa

It will help to put some insulating material over the lettuce, for example straw or newspaper.
Then cover the bed with the wire frame draped with a tarp or blanket(s). Cover the ends of the frame as well. The idea is to create a dead air space to hold the heat radiating from the soil.

I do not know at what temperature the Lilac blooms will be killed. The low temperatures could be bad news for fruit trees as well. Fingers crossed.
