About clay/straw building (Light Earth or Leight Lehnm in Geman):
These clay/straw walls will be built by combining local clay,  loose (not baled) straw and water together and packing it inside a 2x6” wall. This technique is a traditional “infill” in German timber frame structures (many 500 year old + and still occupied) and is now having a resurgence worldwide. The loose straw is combined with the liquid clay, coating the straw in a protective mineralizing coating, which preserves the fiber. After the walls dry, they are plastered using natural plasters inside and out.  We are also creating a “Super Insulated Earth” hybrid wall by wrapping the clay/straw walls with 3 inches of exterior, continuous insulation.

Joseph is a passionate ecological builder, educator and owner of ION Ecobuilding. He spends much of his working with owners, builders and communities in collaborative ecological building projects. Joseph specializes in local, natural, and least toxic materials as well as energy efficiency, and traditional building systems (including earth, straw & lime). Joseph’s ultimate hope is to reinforce a sense of place and enhance the world where we live, by working together and participating in what sustains us.

"As long as there have been communities, humans have been using local natural materials for building shelter and work partied together to help each other with building  projects large and small."  -JB

About the Title
Ecotones are the transition zone between two different plant communities such as forest and prairie, where they meet and integrate. They are the most productive places in nature. The Guild is perfectly perched at the ecotone between community and ecological building education. The Board will work to make the Guild the most productive ecological building community in the South Sound.

Garbage Warrior

Earthship film showing

Tuesday, July 19
6 PM
Tacoma Tool Library
1314 MLK Jr Way
Tacoma, WA

Please Join the NW EcoBuilding Guild and sister chapter ILFI South Sound Collaborative for a FREE movie screening of the documentary Garbage Warrior to learn more about Earthships and their founder, Mike Reynolds. Plus, there will be builders available in the audience to talk about a potential site in this region.

Earthships are a radically sustainable form of building that incorporates many principles such as using trash to build, thermal mass heating, and on-site food production. There are Earthships all over the world, in all climates, but none close to Tacoma - yet.

Learn to Build a Ferro-Cement Tank - Rainwater Catchment System

July 19-23 9:30 A.M. – 4:30 P.M.
Yelm, Washington

Friendly Water for the World Technical Advisor Wayne Medrud and Youth Representative Noah Medrud learned to build these catchment systems while working with Friendly Water in Uganda. Soon they will be returning to India to build them at our new training center in Gandhigram, Tamil Nadu. So they need the practice, and are ready to teach!

These systems in most of the developing world will last 2-3 times longer than plastic tanks, and as long as steel ones, but cost only about half as much. And they can be made by local community members and with locally available materials. Together with BioSand Filters, they provide the “gold standard” in water quality and community engagement.

Come to the training, put in some labor, learn some new things, and share
Friendly Water stories!

Cost: $100, whether you come for one day or all five (as all costs are in materials). And bring lunch.

If you are planning to come from out of town, we can arrange to put you up in Olympia (and get you to the site if you don’t have other transportation.)

Space is limited. To reserve your spot, call 360 918-3642, or e-mail:

Or mail a check to: Friendly Water for the World, 1717 18th Court NE, Olympia, WA 98506

Fresh out of the oven, a baker’s dozen (13) new case studies in the Code Innovations Database!

After a successful crowdfunding campaign in December that raised $25,000 to expand the Code Innovations Database (www.CodeInnovations.org), the Northwest EcoBuilding Guild hired Chris van Daalen to begin publishing new content! Thank you again to all in the community who gave!! It’s happening!

Chris just let us know that over the past 3 months he published 13 new case studies in the Database with many more on the way! They cover everything from rainwater harvesting and mass timber frame buildings to cork & mineral wool insulation innovations! You’ll have to check it out for yourself, but over the coming weeks, we’ll highlight some of these case studies and update you on our plans!

NW EcoBuilding Guild’s “Rising EcoProfessionals” Group: An Emerald Wave?

Is an Emerald Wave overtaking Seattle?

There’s a new group of “Rising EcoProfessionals” emerging from the NW EcoBuilding Guild’s Seattle Chapter, and it’s like a big emerald wave washing over Seattle! This dynamic group of young leaders held an exciting kick-off event at The Bullitt Center in Seattle on May 31st.  Sixty people (of all ages) came and engaged in a tsunami of conversation about technology, climate change and leadership, led by the Guild Board members Jason Lear and Miles Ford, both from Batt + Lear Design Build in Seattle. The group dove into what became a flood of ideas that flowed across the street for after-hours conversation. I met people working green restaurants, Earthships, biomimicry and more!

Conversation also infiltrated halls of the 6-story Bullitt Center, as we toured from the bicycle parking garage up the “irresistible stair” to the magnificent view from the Bullitt Foundation’s elegant top-floor suite. Check out photos from the event and building tour on Facebook here.

Rising EcoProfessionals holds a monthly gathering “Drinks and Design” every second Thursday, next up August 11. You should Like their posts on Facebook see https://www.facebook.com/risingep/ and also have a Meetup page http://www.meetup.com/Seattle-Rising-EcoProfessionals-REP/ which is cool.

Their goal is to bridge generations of builders, designers, and innovators within the eco-built environment. “We connect, we inspire, we SHAKE IT UP!"

Now it seems there are plenty of Rising EcoProfessionals in Tacoma, Olympia and on down to Portland, who could keep the wave going South, and answer REP’s call to connect, inspire and shake it up!  Team up with Green Drinks and ILFI South Sound Collaborative? Who’s in??
