About clay/straw building (Light Earth or Leight Lehnm in Geman): These clay/straw walls will be built by combining local clay,  loose (not baled) straw and wate together and packing it inside a 2x6” wall. This technique is a traditional “infill” in German timber frame structures (many 500 year old + and still occupied) and is now having a resurgence workldwide. The loose straw is combined with the liquid clay, coating the straw in a protective mineralizing coating, which preserves the fiber. After the walls dry, they are plastered using natural plasters inside and out.  We are also creating a “Super Insulated Earth” Hybrid wall by wrapping the clay/straw walls with 3” ofexterior, continuous insulation

Joseph is a passionate ecological builder, educator and owner of ION Ecobuilding. He spends much of his working with owners, builders and communities in collaborative ecological building projects. Joseph specializes in local, natural, and least toxic materials as well as energy efficiency, and traditional building systems (including earth, straw & lime). Joseph’s ultimate hope is to reinforce a sense of place and enhance the world where we live, by working together and participating in what sustains us.

"As long as there have been communities, humans have been using local natural materials for building shelter and work partied together to help each other with building  projects large and small." JB
