Greetings,

I have a how-to question:

My dinning room has an exterior door that opens to a splendid outdoor
patio. I would like to replace this single width door with a wider
French door. The trouble is, I have no idea how to properly cut
through the brick wall. I have seen countless do-it-yourself TV
episodes where they widened doors and windows on a wood clad house.
They basically cut through the wood clad with a reciprocal saw and then
moved the king and jack studs to fit the new door or window casement.
This seems pretty straight forward, but I'm looking for some type of
resource that will explain how to do this job on a brick house.

With the limited research I have done thus far, I have learned that
there are diamond tipped circular saw blades in existence that are
specifically made for dry cutting brick. But these things sell for
about $400 to $1000, and that's just for the blade. I can imagine
using such a blade with a high powered circular saw to make the two
vertical cuts along each side of the existing door opening and then the
two horizontal cuts at the top. I guess I would first open the
interior wall and re-frame the door studs to size before cutting the
brick. However, I don't know if this is really the right way to go
about this. I think this project has a high potential for a major
screw up!

Does anyone have experience with this, or does anyone know of a good
resource for me? I appreciate your feedback.

Thanks,
Tim

TIM,
i don't know where you live but there are companies that specialize in
cutting brick/concrete with those types of blades. i would call around and
see what it would cost to have someone do it for me or call a rental
company. they have them for rent too. home depot rents alot of tools.
