HDMI connection not working

I have a DVR that was connected to a standard TV via coax.
I just got a new HD TV and instead of coax want to connect with an
HDMI cable. There is a Hdmi port on both the TV and the DVR.
When I connect it, I get nothing but static. If I use a coax cable, it
works fine. I want to use the HDMI for HD. Any ideas?
