I recently bought a Samsung 40" 1080P HDTV (LN-S4095D). I love the
features and quality. I also bought a Samsung 1080P up-conversion DVD
player (DVD-HD960). I hooked up the DVD player to the TV via the
included HDMI cable. My Dolby Digital 5.1 audio system is hooked up via
the the optical out from the TV. Out of the box the DVD player's audio
is set to Post Code Modulation (PCM). The TV is able to play the PCM
audio without any problems. However, the audio receiver states that it
is only receiving 2 channels. When the DVD player's audio out is set to
bitstream, the AV Receiver states that it is receiving a dolby digital
5.1 signal. Unfortunately, the TV displays the message: "HMDI Audio Not
Supported." The only reason I'm concerned about this is the fact that
their is a dolby digital logo on the TV. I figured that the TV should
be able to play the front two channels of the 5.1 channels. I also
tried a Sony 40" Bravia (KDL-40XBR2) hooked up to the Samsung Blu-Ray
Player (BD-P1000) via a HDMI cable. Sony actually advertises the XBR TV
as having a built in Dolby Digital decoder. Hypothetically, the TV
should support bitstream dolby digital passed through the HDMI cable.
However, the same thing happened when the movie was played: "HDMI Audio
Not Supported." I don't understand this at all. I don't always use my
home audio system because I live in an apartment and don't want people
to complain about the noise. I am trying to find a TV that supports
dolby digital so I can use either the TV's speakers or the home audio
system's without changing any settings. If you know anything about this
issue, please post your comment.
