As Latu Maharaj received no formal schooling, Sri Ramakrishna hoped that he might acquire at least a rudimentary education, so he tried to take him through the Bengali alphabet himself. Showing him the first few letters, the Master carefully gave Latu their proper pronunciation and asked him to repeat them. But Latu Maharaj was from Bihar, and his pronunciation was quite different from that of a Bengali. Sri Ramakrishna corrected him repeatedly with much amusement, but the result was always the same. Both the Master and Latu began to laugh, and the lesson was stopped for that day. The experiment continued for three days, after which Sri Ramakrishna gave up in despair and told Latu," No more book-learning for you." Thus ended Latu's education.
