Once Akhilananda, who was then a very young boy, was told by Swami Vijnananda to say to Maharaj when he met him: ' There is something within me that needs awakening. Please give me your help.' Akhilananda repeated these words to Maharaj, who replied: ' Why didn't you ask Vijnananda to do this awakening for you?' But Swami Vijnananda had answered ,' I have very little spiritual power within me, but Maharaj lives in the powerhouse. He can easily do what you ask.' Maharaj looked very serious and said: ' Yes, the awakening will come. Don't be impatient. For this awakening one needs initiation.'
