EXTRACTS FROM LETTERS OF SWAMI GAHANANANDAJI
(From the letters provided by a monk, a disciple of Revered Swami Gahananandaji)
Dear daughter ...,
Diksh is a root in Sanskrit. You are aware that only after affixing or suffixing the crude form or base of a noun to the roots they become words. Meaning of the root Diksh is given as Moundya-Ijya-Upanayan-Niyam-vrata-desheshu. You know, MounDya means shaving the head (tonsure), you know Ijya also which is called sacrifice (yajna), sacrificing some favourite thing for attaining God. Upanayan means reaching the Guru’s place for beginning studies. Niyam also you must have studied in conjunction with ‘Yam’ (any great moral rule or duty), ‘Niyam’ (restraint of the mind) etc. You also know the meaning of ‘Vrat’ – taking a vow to do something. Purifying ourselves before commencing any holy task by practicing religious austerities is also called as ‘Diksha’ and the act done before starting any task is called as ‘Diksha’.
I believe, you must have understood in all these days, that this is not just any imagination that Sri Sri Thakur and Holy Mother have chosen you for their work and are assisting you in passing each and every day holding your hand every moment. There is no need for you to worry over anything, have full faith in Sri Sri Thakur and Holy Mother. You do not have to do any preparations for initiation; just keep telling Mother and after initiation write to me at your convenience.
I keep praying to Sri Sri Thakur and Holy Mother for your well-being.
Always your well-wisher,
Swami Gahanananda
