Power of the Name – 32
In this connection Sri Ramakrishna used to tell a very interesting story. Once Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu were talking and playing chess. According to the story, in the midst of that, suddenly Vishnu got up and went out. Goddess Lakshmi was very angry that He did not even have the courtesy to say where he was going and why he was going. But very soon Lord Vishnu came back. Goddess Lakshmi asked where he had gone and why he had behaved so discourteously, leaving her without a word. Then Lord Vishnu replied, “I did not have time, I had to go immediately. A blind devotee of mine was walking along the sandy bank of the river, repeating my name. The washerman had just spread washed clothes on the sand to dry. The blindman had unknowingly stepped on that. On seeing this, the washerman was terribly angry and ran after him with a stick. That is when the poor devotee started calling me, so I had to go.” Goddess Lakshmi asked, “Then why did you come back so quickly?” “I found that he was searching for a pebble to throw back at the washerman. If he does not depend upon me completely and thinks he can defend himself on his own, then he does not need my help. That is why I came back.” This is Sri Ramakrishna's story. So have absolute, unshakable faith. Tremendous change for the better will happen to us. His name is so powerful!
