At the beginning of 1898 Swamiji, Latu Maharaj, and the rest of the party returned to Calcutta from the tour of North India.. Soon after this, property was purchased at Belur on the bank of the Ganges. The headquarters of the Ramakrishna Order was built here.During this perioaj stayed at Nilambar Babu's garden house, which was close to the new property . Brahmachari Hariparvat recalled:

I saw Latu Maharaj at Nilambar Babu's garden house. At that time Sharat Maharaj had just returned from the West and was staying at the monastery. He looked very smart and kept his room and belongings very tidy. Latu Maharaj used to go in and begin to upset the orderliness by moving a book from the desk to the bed, hiding the inkpot in the corner, and so on. It almost became a routine with him. Sharat Maharaj's bed sheet was sparkling white. Sometimes Latu Maharaj would deliberately drag his dusty feet across the clean bed and then lie down and roll on it, laughing all the time. Sharat Maharaj would ask, " What are you doing, Brother Latu? " Latu Maharaj would laugh and say ," Nothing - only testing whether you remember our old ways of life and seeing how Westernized you have become." At this Sharat Maharaj would laugh also.
