Sri Ramakrishna Saranam!

Maa Sabari had a very tender, compassionate heart. She came to Matanga Rishi. Matanga Rishi espied her and gave her permission to be in his habitation. He told her that God in the form of Sri Rama will come to the hermitage some day.

From that day Sabari had no other thoughts than of Rama, no other desire than the desire to have the Darshan of Rama, the chance to touch His Feet and the opportunity to speak with Him. Her heart was saturated with the Ramarasa, the sweetness of the Rama principle. She had no other Japam or Dhyana or spiritual exercise. She spent her time, preparing for the visit of Rama to the hermitage; just as she cleaned the paths, she cleaned her heart, too. Pebbles and thorns disappeared from both through her efforts. She gathered fruits and tubers from the jungle trees and plants and kept them by every day, for no one knew when Rama would arrive! And she took no risks. She tasted every fruit, whether it was bitter, sour or sweet, so that Rama could eat the best. Thus, her heart became Rama Hridaya!

Sabari was so immersed in Rama that the ascetic lost all awareness of her sex. Matanga left this body and gave up his hermitage to Sabari, saying, you alone deserve to be here when Rama arrives!

When Shri Ramchandra reached the Ashram of Maataji Sabari:

Kanda mool phal suras ati
Diye Ram kahu aani
Prem sahit prabhu khaaye
Baaram baar barhaani

After tasting herself she offered Sri Rama, the most delicious bulbs, roots and fruits.

The Lord with great love partook of them praising them again and again.

She pleaded with Shri Ram.

Paani jooree aagee bhaee thaaree
Prabhu bilokee preeti ati baaree

Kehi vidhi astute karow tumhaareee
Adan jaateee mai jor matee bhaaee

Mother Sabari stood with clasped hands, and she decided to address Shri Raamchandra, with words of pure love and devotion, she spoke:

"I don't know in what form I shall welcome you, because I am termed to be the Lowest of the Low and dull headed…."

But, Shri Raam responded:

Kaa raghupattie sinu bhaminu baata
Maanow ek bhagatee kar naataa

Shri Ramchandra assures her, saying:

"Listen, oh Good lady, God recognizes no other kinship except that of devotion…"

And Sri Ram further tells Maataji Sabari, and all of us:

Jaati paati kul dharma barhaaeee
Dhan bal parijan gun chaturaaee

Bhaatee heen nar sohaee kaisaa
Binu jal baareedh dekhiyaa jaisaa

God does not recognize a person because of:

Jaatee = past birth,
Kul = generation, or tribe, etc.
Dharm = a person's religious belief(s), or in other words which faith he belongs to, or if a person claims to be great.

Neither does he recognize a person because of:

Dhan = wealth,
Bal = strength,
Parijan = relative, your kit or kin,
or Gurn = talent or cleverness.

Shri Ram further says that a man with out devotion is a like a cloud without water. Just as a cloud without water is useless, a man with out devotion is useless.

 NINE STEPS OF WORSHIP

Dear Sandeep Das,

This really is a moving and wonderful narration, that transports one to the very 'kutil' of Ma Shabari!
