I often used to wonder about the later part of Radhu’s life.... and got to know about the wonderful transformation in her later life while reading “A Blessed Life – Biography of Pravrajika Bharatiprana.” By Pravrajika Jnanadaprana... this must have been sometime when Bharatiprana Mataji was staying at Varanasi... Mataji was then Sarala di... before taking on the mantle of heading the Holy Mother’s Math “Sri Sarada Math”:

“An important event that took place at this time (in 1949) is described as follows by Ushadevi Rani.

During Radhu’s last illness, Satyen Maharaj made all arrangements for her treatment and sent her to Varanasi. Priya Maharaj supervised the arrangements and Sarala di looked after Radhu for two months. She would cook Radhu’s food and at 11 a.m. both of us would go and feed her. Everyone knows about Radhu’s rude behaviour with Holy Mother. But during this last illness, Holy Mother filled her whole being ‘Look at the change in her!” I remarked to Sarala di. She calmly said, “Radhu is Yogamaya, the divine power whose support Holy Mother took to live in the relative world. Will she not change at the end? For that (divine) play, Radhu had to enact the part of a mad person. Now that the work is done, what will she do but to call on Holy Mother?” Radhu became restless to go back to Jairambati and said, “I do not want to die in Varanasi and attain Nirvana. I want to go to the Mother.” Sarala di tried to coax her into giving up the idea of going to Jairambati. “You remain here and you will be alright”, she said. But Radhu would not listen to her; “No Sarla di, you are doing so much for me, but tell me shall I not go to the Mother? Why should I die here and attain Nirvana? Let Satyen da (Swami Atmabodhananda). Let Priya da (Swami Atmaprakashananda) die here. I will go to Mother. I will not stay here. Gagan da, you take me to Mother’s house and leave me with her.” How surprising! It happened exactly as she wished. On her insiatence Gagan Maharaj took her to Jairambati and within fifteen days Radhu dies in Mother’s room.” P: 120-121

May we follow the spiritual path shown by Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda to reach God, the goal of our lives, and by His power help others also in their struggle to reach Him.

Usha Rani Basu was my father's own "Mashi"(maternal aunt) and the grand daughter of Sri Balaram Basu.  She was staying with Sarala Ma (Pravrajika Bharatiprana and Prafulla Devi in the same house in Benaras). When she used to come and stay in our house I heard this story from her on different occasions. Of Course there were many stories like this which She used to narrate to other devotees which at that time we children never thought has much importance.  Now I regret not to be more attentive.

Rita Dutta

Jai Radhu!

Radhu looked upto her aunt for everything in her life. She had lost her father while she was in her mother’s womb and lost her mother to insanity soon after birth. As a child she was crying, desperately crawling to catch her mother who was herself mentally a child then and was playing about trailing strings of many colors. Her aunt had rushed to take her up at that moment.

She grew on her aunt’s lap. Her aunt too was suffering from the loss of uncle and Radhu was her god-sent prop. But her aunt was soon becoming god-mother to each and every child and grown-up near and far and was doing a great job counseling many people and guiding the destiny of countless people who came to her.
Radhu surely must have felt jealous of all this. Which child would like a hundred sibling brothers and sisters competing?
She grew up a good girl. Her aunt did whatever she could to make Radhu educated though her other relatives, going with the times, tried to prevent the girl from getting smart.
Her marriage, done with glittering ceremony, was not a great success.
She turned to her aunt again. But she had her greatest shock when her aunt, in her last days, refused her.
Did it hurt her love?
Soon when Radhu’s end came, she bravely preferred to die of tuberculosis in the hut in which she had lived with her aunt, with her sacred memories than in a modern hospital with all facilities, in holy Varanasi.
She and her aunt were both beings of light, each acting according to her script.
Jai Radhu! from http://littlelittlestories.blogspot.in/2012/02/jai-radhu.html

There is more : When Swami Ishanananda (Varada Mj.) whom Radhu as well as many others of Mother's family used to call as Gopal Da, because Varada was also the name of Mother's brother, was trying to convince Radhu to stay in Varanasi. Their underlying sentiment was that Radhu should die in Varanasi and they tried to hide the fact that Radhu had terminal stage TB. But Radhu had already overheard about her health, and she said : 'Gopalda, I know what disease I have. You want me to die in Kashi so that I will have Mukti. Do you think the one who brought me up, who cared for me so much, do you think She (Holy Mother) won't come for me now? Even if my body is thrown into gutters, She (Mother) will come and take me to Her abode holding my hands. I wish to live in the same house where I lived with Her and I wish to die there'. So it happened. She died in the same house in Jayarambati where she used to live with Mother. This and so many other sweet incidents are there in the Matri Sannidhye ..
