Power of the Name – 08
Once there was an Interfaith conference in Melbourne. I went to represent Hinduism and a Buddhist representative was reading a paper. He came to the word truth and one bishop raised his hand and asked mischievously, “Well, What is truth?” The man was not a Buddhist monk, he was a Buddhism practitioner. He said, “Truth is truth!” Again the questioner asked, “Means what?” “Truth is truth!” was the answer. There was a big discussion on what is truth. The Buddhist said that truth was there before creation. They plied him with questions. Then what was before creation? The question was directed towards that. I was sitting quiet. Towards the end, somebody asked me, “Sister, what does Hinduism say about what existed before creation?” I said, “We have got a beautiful hymn in the Rig Veda, and the hymn is titled ‘Nasadiya suktam - when non-existence was not’. We cannot say when existence was there because we cannot go there and investigate it. But when non-existence was not two negatives make one positive. So you can draw the conclusion that existence was there. But you cannot say that existence was there, then you have to prove it. To prove we have to go behind creation and there our mind cannot go. To escape from this dilemma, the great rishis of olden times, coined this Nasadiya Suktam - when non-existence was not. They were fascinated by the term. They noted it down.
