PATHWAY TO PEACE AND FREEDOM - 16
Brother Lawrence was debilitated during the war. He retired and joined a monastery in Paris. There he worked in the kitchen. The young members would come rushing in quickly and demand food. There was a ledge on which he had to keep the tray of food as each demand came. He could not respond quickly and the angry young people would say, ‘You lame, one legged man, you know I don’t have much time. Serve me food immediately!’ Poor Brother Lawrence felt hurt and insulted. He says, ‘My heart was shaken and bleeding and I used to tell the Lord, I don’t mind, but if my heart shakes like this, you won’t be able to sit quietly there. If you want to sit quietly in my heart, make it calm.’ This is self- surrender.
