Religion and Suffering – 10
In 1954, there was a conference in Calcutta connected with the Centenary Celebrations of Holy Mother. Revered Dhirapranaji, myself and two other devotees were given first class train tickets to go there as delegates. On the way, after Madras an apparently rich middle aged lady dressed in very expensive clothes and jewellery entered our compartment. She then opened her vanity box and began applying all sorts of things on her face. This went on for one hour. Then she asked us where we were going. When we told her that we were going to Kolkata, she took out some money(big amount) and said, “I am a very miserable person. Can you please take this as an offering to Dakshineswar temple on my behalf.” Then she told us that she was the Maharani of Vijayanagar! She, who belongs to a royal family, was very very miserable. In contrast Dhirapranaji and myself were very simple in our dress and outlooks, but were happy. We felt sorry for the Maharani. We felt a pain in our heart seeing her putting on a mask of makeup to cover up the raging fire of sorrow inside her. Expensive clothes and ornaments on the outside, but inside her was hell. So that’s why Sri Ramakrishna says, “Seeing the big mansions and rich people don’t think that they are all very happy.”
