Approaching the guru with firewood is symbolic. It indicates one’s readiness to serve the guru; that is one meaning. Another meaning is - “Just as fire would reduce the firewood to ashes, the Guru, with his knowledge of fire, destroys the ego, the ignorance, the arrogance and all the dark qualities which prevent the disciple to make progress in leading a good life.”
