In The Gospel of The Holy Mother - Holy Mother and disciple are discussing the Shodasi Puja performed on the Phalaharini Kali Puja (June 1872)

The Master performed the Shodasi Puja about a month and a half after my arrival at Dakshineswar (probably on the night of the Phalaharini Kali Puja, June, 1872). I had then commenced my sixteenth  1 year. At about nine at night, he sent for me. Hriday had made all the necessary arrangements for the worship. The Master asked me to be seated. I sat on the stool facing the jar of Ganga water which used to be kept at the north-western corner of the room. The Master sat near the western door and was facing eastward. All the doors were closed. The articles for worship were on my right.

Disciple:
How did he worship?

Mother:
I soon became semi-conscious due to spiritual fervour. Hence I do not know how exactly the worship proceeded. 2

Disciple:
What did you do when you became conscious?

Mother:
I saluted the Master mentally and came away.

Disciple:
It was the night of the (Phalaharini) Kali Puja. There must have been many people present. Did none come to I know about the worship?

Mother:
Did I not say that the doors were all closed? The Kali Temple was full of festivities that night. All were busy with that. And besides, what business had they with the Master? Nothing beyond seeing him and saluting him!

 Disciple:
Was anyone else present at the time of worship?

Mother:
A boy named Dinu, from Mukundapur, a distant nephew of the Master used to stay with him. The Master loved the boy very much. He had picked the flowers and the Bilva leaves for the worship. Hriday had made all the other arrangements. There was nobody except the Master when the actual worship began. At the close of it, Hriday came in.

Ram Babu has mentioned in his book (The biography of Sri Ramakrishna in Bengali, written by Sri Ramachandra Datta.) that the Shodasi Puja took place at Jayrambati. Ah me! People in that part of the country are so gossipy. As it is, they used to comment, "To whom have you given the girl in marriage? A crazy, insane man!" Now imagine what would have been the consequences of worshipping a woman there!

After the worship, I continued to stay at Dakshineswar for a year. Then I fell ill and returned to Jayrambati. At Dakshineswar, Sambhu Babu (Sambhunath Mallick) had arranged for my treatment by the physician Prasad Babu.

1 Actually nineteenth.
2 I heard later from Lakshmi-didi that the Mother had told her: "First he painted my feet with alta(liquid lac-dye), and put vermilion on my forehead. Then he clad me in a new cloth. He also fed me with sweets and betel-roll." Lakshmi-didi asked her smilingly, "You are so shy, dear. How did he put the cloth on you?" The Mother replied, "I was in an altogther different state of semi absorption then." The Mother had related this incident to Jnanananda also. He too had asked her, "Mother, did you not feel any hesitation or shyness when the Master offered flowers at your feet and. fed you with sweets with his own hands?" The Mother had told him, "No, I saw him, no doubt, doing all this, but I had no inclination to utter a word even."

Sastryji,

Welcome, from all of us- we the mother's children.

Satwikji's posts are fabulous inspiration and continuous blessings from Maa.

I thought I will share this link with you and all of our friends in the group,

You know, when somebody expressed his confusion and was kind of hesitating about accepting Maa as Holy Mother, Sharadanandaji said, "Do  you then think that Shri Ramakrishna married an ordinary village girl?"

Maa was never an ordinary girl but she did her best to hide herself and remained an ordinary woman to outside world.

I must stop here, even Swamiji once said, "I dare not speak about Maa..."

She will let you know all about herself...

Thousands Pranams and lots of love to Maa...

Regards,
Rita

Mother's ways are weird!!! Even before I could reply to Sastryji, I see a reply to his query from a sister and exactly writing what I had planned to write including the link that I was planning to send with my reply. Maybe to us Mother might look like ordinary village girl. But this ordinary village girl but She had concealed Her divinity for the easy access to Her blessings for the devotees. The Master Himself had had acknowledged Mother's greatness by saying if was not for her purity and divinity he would also have got entrapped in the world of Maya!!! And this reminds me of the wonderful stanza in the Devyaparadhkshmapana Stotra:

"Chita-Bhasma lepo garalamahsnam dikpatadharo
Jatadhari Kanthe Bhujagapatiharipashupatih
Kapali bhutesho bhajati Jagadiahika Padavim
Bhavani Tvat Panigrahan paripati falamidam"

"That Pashupati, the Lord of creatures who is besmeared with the ashes of the funeral pyre, who has swallowed poison and has quarters of the world for His garments, who has matted hair and is garlanded with the kind of serpents, and who holds a skull as a begging bowl in His hands, is dubbed the Lord of the universe, is because of His marriage with Thee, O Mother Bhavani"

"One day, while stroking his feet, Sarada Devi asked the Master, "What do you think of me?" Quick came the answer: "The Mother who is worshipped in the temple is the mother who has given birth to my body and is now living in the nahabat, and it is She again who is stroking my feet at this moment. Indeed, I always look on you as the personification of the Blissful Mother Kali." The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna Vol I: Page 38.

"Holy Mother was conscious of her divine nature, but she rarely expressed this awareness. For many years Sri Ramakrishna practiced great austerities and formally renounced the world, but Holy Mother lived as a simple householder, surrounded by quarrelsome and greedy relatives. As a teacher she taught the realization of God alone is real, and everything else, impermanent. The human body so treasured by most people, survives cremations as only three pounds of ashes. Holy Mother -- humility itself -- claimed that she was in no way different from other devotees of the Master. Her disciples felt awed and uplifted when she blessed them by touching their head with the same hand which had touched the feet of God. She was fully aware of her disciples' present limitations and their future possibilities. No one went away from her with a downcast heart." - http://www.ramakrishna.org/hm.htm

Respected Devotees,

These two incidents have always touched my heart as far as Divine Power of Holy Mother.

First one is, when Swamiji wrote to his brother Disciple:

You (addressing Swami Shivananda) have not yet understood the wonderful significance of Mother’s life, none of you. But gradually you will know. Without Shakti (Power) there is no regeneration for the world. Why is our country is the weakest and most backward of all the countries? Because Shakti is held in dishonour there (i.e. in India. The Swamiji is writing from America). Mother has been born to revive that wonderful Shakti; and making Her the nucleus, once more will Gargis and Maitreyis be born into the world. Dear Brother, you understand little now, but by degrees you will come to know it all. Hence it is Her Math, that I want first….Without the grace of Shakti nothing is to be accomplished. What do I find in America and Europe? The worship of Shakti, the worship of Power. Yet they worship Her ignorantly through sense-gratification. Imagine, then, what a lot of good they will achieve, who will worship Her with all purity, in a Sattvika spirit, looking upon Her as their Mother! I am coming to understand things clearer every day, my insight is opening out more and more. Hence we must build a Math for Mother. First Mother and Mother’s daughters, then Father and Father’s sons! Can you understand this? …. To me, Mother’s grace is a hundred thousand times more valuable than Father’s. Mother’s grace, Mother’s blessings are all paramount to me….. Please pardon me, I am a little bigoted here, as regards Mother. If but Mother orders, her demons can work anything. Brother, before the proceeding to America I wrote to Mother to bless me. Her blessing came and at one bound I cleared the ocean. There, you see, in this terrible winter I am lecturing from place to place and fighting against odds, so that funds may be collected for Mother’s Math.

And second one is when Thakurji scolds Hridayram:

Once Sri Ramakrishna said to Hriday, “Look here. You may insult me, but don’t hurt her feelings. If He who dwells in this [his own body] hisses,  you may somehow get by; but if He who dwells in her [Holy Mother] hisses, no one – not even Brahma, Vishnu, or Shiva – will be able to protect you.”

May Holy Mother Bless us all,

a devotee of Devotees of Holy Mother

Sister Nivedita said,

In Sarada Devi one sees realised that wisdom and sweetness to which the simplest of womes may attain. And yet, to myself the stateliness of her courtesy and her great open mind are almost as wonderful as her sainthood. Her life is one long stillness of prayer.

Long after the passing away of Sri Ramakrishna the Holy Mother's presence had been a tremendous yet a very silent guiding force to everyone... And continues to be so even today.

The life of the Holy Mother was so gentle, simple and holy that Sister Nivedita once wrote in a letter…

Dearest Mother,

I wish we send you a wonderful hymn, or a prayer. But somehow even that seem too loud, too full of noise! Surely you are the most wonderful thing of Sri Ramakrishna’s own chalice of his love for the world, a token left with his children in these lonely days, and we should be very still and quiet before you, except indeed for a little fun!

Prayerful regards

Rupsa
