We believe that the Adi Guru, the first guru, is Shiva himself. Shiva is swayambhu - self born.  And we conceive of him as sitting in deep meditation. He delved into himself and then some mantras came up within his mind. He gave them to some people and that has been handed down to us through generations. Every great person who repeated the mantram, injected into it his own shakti.  So, by the time it comes to us, it is inexplicably powerful.
