A boy called Narasimhacharya has cropped up in our midst. He has been loafing about the city for the last three years. Loafing or no loafing, I like him;
(Letter to Alasinga Perumal - November 2, 1893)
Narasimhacharya was Alasinga’s relative,G.G. Narasimhacharya (or Narasimhachariar, for respect),who was to becomethe assistant editor of Brahmavadin. Swami Vivekananda addressed him G.G, and wrote a few letters to him from the United States. GG was about the same age as the other friends, but he was quite ‘modern’ in his approach towards life. He has been influenced by Brahmo Samaj ideals, especially by Raja Ram Mohan Roy’s teachings, for some time. So he did not like image worship and such other ancient ideals. However,, when he met Vivekananda, he changed completely. He actively took part in campaign to make Vivekananda the Indian representative to the Parliament of Religions, He was in regular correspondence with Vivekananda, He must also be given the credit of being one of the instruments in starting the journal, Prabuddha Bharata, in July 1896.
After Swamiji returned to India from the West, GG stayed with Swamiji for some time in Almora with the intention of becoming a monk. But he could not become a monk, partly because his guru, Vivekananda, did not want him to. However, Swamiji was full of appreciation for GG’s work. He wrote to Alasinga once (31 August 1894), when he got information that Narasimhacharya was spreading the message of Vedanta in Mysore: ‘Let G.G. and others, who have no immediate necessity for earning something, do as they are doing, i.e casting the idea about broadcast. G.G is doing well at Mysore. That is the way.
