Power of the Name – 22
Many of you are aware of the story that Sri Ramakrishna says in the Gospel.
Once there was a boat wreck near Lanka and one man alone escaped. He swam and
swam and reached a land, that was Lanka. When he landed there the rakshasas
found him and they took him to the King. The King was Vibheeshana. Seeing a
human being, he felt that he was really seeing Sri Rama. He looked after the
man well and treated him like God himself. He made him stay there for a long
time. Many times the man said, “I want to go back.” But Vibheeshana pleaded “Oh
no, please don’t leave me, you are like my God Sri Rama, please stay here.” One
day the man became very restless and Vibheeshana realised that he had to send
him. Vibheeshana then wrote something on
a leaf, tied it to the man’s waist and said, “Walk over the waves, you will not
sink. Have faith”. Seeing the beautiful expression of Vibheeshana’s faith, the
man did not have an inkling of doubt. He fully believed him. He stepped on to
the water and walked on as if it was a glass sheet. The water was there but he
did not sink. He walked on and on and he was really very happy. After walking a
long distance on the sea he thought let me see what is written on the leaf. He
opened that and saw the word Sri Rama written on the leaf. And he thought, “Oh! only this name?” That’s
it! He was sunk! Doubt came and his
faith was shaken. So faith is very
important – says Sri Ramakrishna again and again.
