Guru Purnima – 01
Guru means one who is greater or higher in knowledge. Only such a person should we accept as guru, if not, he will not be able to help us along the path we want to go. Once we find such a person, we have to approach him with due humility. So in olden times it was prescribed that the would-be disciple should approach the would-be guru with समित्पाणिः with firewood in hand, and not with an application form. In olden times gurus dwelt in the forest. Fire had to be kept burning and since there were no match sticks, plenty of firewood was needed, to keep it burning.
