Respected Devotees, Nameshkar,
What Ushaji has pointed out by quoting the significance of Japa by Holy Mother is very much practical.
Mind has the natural tendency to go towards the world always and acquire vasanas. Out of so many vasanas acquired either in the past or in the present,, some particular vasanas might have made deep rooted groove in the mind due to habit of repeated actions and re-living in the thoughts. When we pour water in the floor, all the waters rush to flow twoards a particular direction where there is a deep groove in the floor. In the same way, mind helplessly rushes towards some particular vasanas and make oneself to do repeated action again and again. Thus it becomes one's habit.
With the above state of mind , if one sits in meditation seat , he may not be able to conncentrate. Hence, first one needs to come out from the preveious deep rooted habits which pulls towards the world, by means of creating another deep rooted habits by way of chanting Japa regularly . This also becomes an habit again. It is like how we remove virus in the computer, by installing another software application which is anti-virus. Virus is a software and anti virus is also a software. Thus the repeated habits of bad can be changed by developing oneself with another repeated habits of good. Eventhough initially one starts chanting Japa as mechanical repeatation, over the period , how the water in the floor automatically rushes through deep rooted groove in the floor , our mind also
automatically rushes twoards the Divine thought , which is also due to habit. But this habit is for good and in long run it helps in developing concentration during meditation along with the regular practice of Jnana, bakthi, karma, dharana. That is the Power of doing Japa regularly.
Ushaji, Thanks for posting Holy Mother's saying on Japa.
Thanks with regards,
R. Parameswaran.

Dear List,
Here is more on Sohamsa:
|
Sohamsa is the name of the Sun God as addressed to by Sri Ganesha. Soham is a Sanskrit word or mantra which means I am Him (Him refers to the omniscient Brahma) and thus, Soham is the mantra stating 'aham brahmasmi'. All the living beings on earth produce this sound 'So' while inhaling and 'Ham' when they exhale. This mantra which is a constant prayer of every living being proclaims the fact that the creature is a living soul akin to God, its creator. All vedic seers are unanimous that one can attain moksha, or liberation from the cycle of rebirth by meditating on the breath and mentally repeating the mantra 'soham'. By doing so, all evil is destroyed and one becomes equal to the devas. Soham is a combination of two words saH + ahaM. The joining of saH + ahaM is governed by the principle of Visarga Sandhi and represents Paramatman/ Absolute. In the reverse, the word 'hamsa' is derived from joining of the words ahaM + saH and represents the Jivatman/ individual soul. These two words sohaM and haMsa are the same with reversed phonemes representing pranayama (breathing process) where one starts with the inhalation and the other with exhalation. Taken together, these words sohaM + haMsa = sohaMsa and refers to the merging of the Jivatman and Paramatman. ...by Sanjay Rath |

AND MEDITATION
Respected Prabeshji,
Mahapurush Maharaj always told to chant the name at each and every work. It
will be little difficult at beginning but later it will be just assimilated in
the system.
Bharatji explained it wonderfully that regularity should be there.
SOHAM japa is also called AJAPA JAPA and everyone does it unconsciously, but it
proves that we are PURE BRAHMAN. Whether you conscious and unconscious, you are
always THAT. But who cares to practice for self - realization. It is very easy
to die like cats&dogs than meditation. Raja Maharaj used say that it is
very easy to dig a field with spade rather than sit and meditate.

Das

Yes, this was another question I had. It is very easy to skip meditation and japa. I know a lot of emphasis has been put into regularity, but most of the time, I find myself crunched here and there. One of the things I have been trying over a few years is doing nirantar japa - even during work, while walking, while playing, or eating. I am glad we have swamijis and maharaj jis and senior people guiding us. Could anyone please suggest what should be done? Is it better to sit down in a seat and meditate for 30 mins and do japa full whole concentration rather than spending all day doing japa mentally?

Dear Prabesh,
One very easy way to withdraw the mind from the routine of daily life, is to focus on your ishta devata/devi’s image in your heart chakra. Imagine Thakur sitting in your heart-lotus. Very quickly, the mind stills. The mind is very busy specially for those who are working and multi-tasking and managing a lot. It becomes difficult to empty the mind. Focussing on the heart-lotus will help. The whole aim is to go more and more inwards. Try to withdraw the mind from the outside to the inside. Practise it, its not very difficult.

Dear Sankhadip,
My situation is as bad. I too have a difficulty focussing most of the time. Hence the tip: focus on Thakurs image in your heart rather than on the picture in front, and the mind stills very fast.
