Man does not know what is within him; and because of that, he feels the need for a little guidance. Such guidance can come only from people who have travelled already by that road. Left  to oneself, what one can achieve is only through the slow evolutionary process of nature. The sages of the Upanishads, Buddha, Jesus, Sankaracharya and Sri Ramakrishna, belong to the highest category of gurus. They all say: we have realized the truth and we can help you also to realize the truth. Buddha refers to the spiritual path as an ancient path, a path which had become overgrown with weeds and through his life and experience, that path has been cleared and made fit for other aspirants to walk over. This is what a guru does.
