Hi,
I'm from Ann Arbor but in Holland quite a bit. Dug Song over at
A2geeks & Tech brewery told me to look up Elevator UP and I ran across
this group. I'm a partner at a different type of Coworking facility in
Ann Arbor and I thought I would share a little about our place A2
MechShop, perhaps the coolest place on earth, http://www.a2mechshop.com.
Please note, this isn't a membership drive, due to limited space we
are pretty much full.
We have a technical / industrial coworking shop which house 6
entrepreneurial enterprises. The MechShop grew out of a once a month
meeting of Makers called GO-Tech (see the yahoo tech group notbago or
search for us on makezine.com) next GO Tech Meeting August 11th, 7:00
pm at the A2 Mechshop. last meeting we had 50 folks 2 meetings ago we
had 100.
What makes us different is we have a full electronics lab and machine
shop populated with lathes, mills, welding equipment, CNC's … The
MechShop is a break-even entity, rent just pays the bills. All the
machinery belongs to whoever brought it. There is no joint owned
equipment. That said, we all share our equipment with each other. Some
of the ownership is lopsided, i.e. some of the guys own a lot more
stuff than others but that does not cause any problems, and the owner
has first rights on use. We require in order to run a piece of
equipment, like the big Fadal CNC, you need to be dchecked out by the
owner of the equipment. There is usually someone around to lend a hand
which is great. Remember its not the stuff ITS THE PEOPLE. There is a
synergy that comes with coworking that makes everything worth it.

Hi Bob-
There's a group of us that are going to be out in Ann Arbor on the
18th to attend the new tech night event. We would dig an opportunity
to come check out the A2 MechShop and talk about how its worked out
and what lessons learned you might have to offer.
We want to check out Workantile Exchange and the Tech Brewery over the
course of the day as well...it's going to be a busy one ;)
